I wonder how updating to Windows10 next month for free will affect my computer.

I have been a big fan of Windows7 but I didn't bother with Windows8 due to bad reviews.

I think it would be good idea to get the freebie, as my understanding is that Microsoft will only be supporting 10 in the near future

I reckon Ross has a laptop

Make sure your power supply is capable too if that's your method, Janus

Yeah I read it again and realised he had a 610m which is the laptop version - m meaning "mobile".

I have a 1000w Thermaltake, pretty sure I'll be right :p

It's a free upgrade for the entire first year so you are better off waiting a few months for all the bugs and bullshit to be sorted out first.

Isn't ironing out all the bugs what the Windows 10 Technical Preview that came out last October is for?

Honestly I wouldn't bother with upgrading to 10 with existing computers. Windows 7 support will run to 2020 and Windows 8 support will run to 2023.

I think you will find that once Win 10 is off and running, support for 7 and 8 will dry up pretty quick, especially from 3rd party products, like apps...particularly Win 7 which doesn't support Winshop or whatever it's called

I've always found that sticking fat with the existing operating system on my computer has resulted in far less problems moving forward than upgrading to the new windows version. Then again, my needs are likely to be different from yours.

Sure, in theory.

Yes, I agree. I only upgraded to XP once '98SE was no longer supported or compatible, and went to Win7 when I needed a 64bit OS. But the scene is different now. Have you noticed it's free? They want everybody on it. Then they won't justify the costs of supporting the older OS's, and that will be that

Ross, the upgrade will be done in situ and retain all your existing data and settings. The only drawback is if you use Media Center - there is no version or plug-in for Windows 10 for that, and it will be removed on upgrade.

As has been mentioned, security patches for W7 will be available until 2020, so no great hurry to move if you don't wish to. The upgrade is free for a year from launch date (July 29). Hardware specifications and performance characteristics should be similar and there are some significant security enhancements that make the upgrade worthwhile.

How much for your old games?
Cant put a price on mine. You could probably buy them cheap on ebay. But mine was a present from my late Granddad. I reckon if someone offered me a grand i wouldn't part with it.

I have the same one... <3

I also have these among others -

Most of my Holy Communion money went straight on getting Donkey Kong: $37 was a lotta money for an eight year-old back in '83! Still kicking on but the screen has faded a bit. Makes jumping barrels extra challenging. Might still have DK II & III around somewhere, too. Had the Mario's Cement Factory tabeltop back in the day...

Same with my Star Wars stuff. Could offer me a King's ransom. But it still wouldn't be enough...
