There are plenty of homophobic atheists. It's not a religious disease.

They aren't the reason gay marriage has been held back. They wouldn't even give a shit about the sacredness of marriage if they were really atheists.

Only 8% of Australians attend church at least once a month, of this a huge amount will be old people about to die and if you have been to a Catholic Church lately they will likeLY be Vietnamese, not to mention the large proportion who are pro gay marriage.

To blame religion or the religious for any policy is just a lie that is not borne by statistical truths. That's not to say that many don't pretend that their bigotry has a deeper reasoning.

But that's not really how democracy is supposed to,work. Unfortunately democracy does not neccesarily protect minorities by its very nature.

It's overstated as the stats provide. Anglicanism has had gay priests for a while now, we all know how forgiving Catholicism is of sexual indiscretion.
Homophobia is NOT a religious issue and you are giving people an out by suggesting it is. Fewer than 8% of the country are even remotely religious, don't be stupid and make out that they have held sway.

I think you're thinking of utilitarianism, not democracy. In any case the 14th amendment was ratified by a democratically elected government in 1868.

I think you're thinking of utilitarianism, not democracy. In any case the 14th amendment was ratified by a democratically elected government in 1868.

I completely agree with the decision, but states have regularly voted against it. The interpretation of the 14th Amendment isn't that straightforward, hence the time it has taken to happen.

The 14th was forced on states (for good reason) and is patchily enacted and has been so for the whole time.

Bollox have they, your average bloke isn't homophobic because the bible or his priest has said so, he's homophobic because he fears the unknown, the same reason he is racist, sexist etc. blaming religion is a nice little safety valve for people who think humans are inherently good...we aren't.

There was never a pre religious utopia of tolerance.

Yep, im all for equality and so in the spirit of fairness i think the right thing to do is ban hetro marriage, surely in this day and age you dont need some silly ceremony and the rest of the rubbish that goes with it. its a hoax, some people i know are in the best reltionships, been together 40 years but arent married, is their relationship of any less value to someone who decided in their early 20s that they had to get married due to fairytales & shit.... too many disney movies and happilly ever after rubbish. its a scam, ban it all. bang whoever you want, stay as a couple for ever, swing, sneak over to the neighbours house while he is at work, have mass orgies do whoever you want, but dont get married, probably the single most pointless trivial thing we humans do....
