Was only ever a niche/luxury format but was very successful in its own right and by far the best quality home video product for nearly 20 years before DVD came along.

Pretty much a big, expensive forerunner to the DVD.

Yeah, except you'd have to swap/flip disc every hour. LD discs only a max of 60mins (Though I think standard LD discs only old 30mins).

At school we had a player and the only disc the school had was the New Domesday Book, it was freaking awesome! Like a preview of the Internet.

My IT teacher told us that betamax was superior in every way, but VHS recorded slightly quicker, less delay after hitting record. The army ordered all VHS for their purposes, and that gave VHS a leg up that it used to win the war.

Anyone here able to verify that?

I thought it was because VHS stitched up the movie distribution deals and Betamax didn't bother because it was the 'industry standard'.

It was friggin' expensive!

Can remember it being $70 (maybe more?) for ONE movie.

My ex's dad had Debbie Does Dallas on laser disc.
