The problem with the prequels were they were too kiddy....they wanted those toy profits
Hadn't seen Menace for years until last night. And yeah, this hit me harder than a Tusken Raider's gaderffii. Hell, could you imagine any of the slapstick crap from the supposed epic Naboo battle scene during the Rebel attack on the Death Star in Star Wars?

Actually, you can see a-lot of the prequels' problems in the first movie. Static direction, clunky dialogue and wooden performances (but, of course, nowhere near as bad!) Really noticeable watching Star Wars and Empire back-to-back on the big screen.

JJ will make us forget the prequels ever happened!

The rot started in Return of the Jedi. Ewoks! Empire was best where Lucas wasn't director and had someone willing to stand up to him. Jedi should have been darker, with one of Leia, Han or Chewbacca dying. Along with either R2D2 or C3PO destroyed beyond repair. It should have been a victory at great cost.

Jesus, it was aimed at early to mid teenagers not adults.

Ford wanted Han killed off but Lucas put the foot down.

Apparently he still does, so Episode 7 might finally deliver.

Harrison Ford is such a grump old man, even when he was young.

Exactly, not at 7 year olds like the prequels. No one is saying they should have been hacked apart with a rusty sword and it have an R rating, but the death of a loved character would have given it real depth/emotion.

The rot started in Return of the Jedi. Ewoks!
Ha! Much loved at the time, though. The audience completely lost its shit whenever they were on-screen. Especially during the battle on Endor when they cut sick, bringing down the Empire with spears and logs.

Guess Lucas tried to replicate that with the Gungans on Naboo. But holy shit, it was pretty juvenile. Also, those slimy suckers are nowhere near as endearing as those fuzzy Ewok bastards.

Gary Kurtz has often cited Raiders as a turning point for Lucas. After that, he apparently just wanted "rollercoasters," eschewing nuance and character work. Alas...

The toys...

The profits from the toys ruined lucas...

He never made a cent from the actual first movie...all his profits came from merchandise

Disagree, there were capable minds at Lucas arts and Lucas film, they just had to bide their time til George took a back seat.

Selling the company is like us saying we should've folded or relocated in the Choco dark days.

Was that ever gonna actually happen?

Everyone into Star Wars should read Darth Plagueis. Well written Star Wars and ties up a LOT of loose ends in the prequels, even stuff like why Maul was so critically underutilised.

I know it shouldn't be up to a (now) non-canon book to fix the main show but it does so anyway.

Disney is gonna flog Star Wars worse than the Transformers series.

You think the toys were bad before. The new movie has a droid which was put in AFTER they came up with the toy design.

Nah it actually can't get worse to any serious degree and at least Lucas can no longer keep ******* shit up and release edited versions of the movies which make them worse.

Kathleen Kennedy recently spoke about how Lucas, understandably, found it incredibly difficult to let go.

Clean break was probably best for all parties.

Especially future Star Wars films...
