The right to bear arms is like the right to free speech. Yes, you can go around spouting racist bullshit but please don't it's stupid. You have the right to carry a weapon but please don't it's stupid.

Those who open carry rifles to the coffee shop astound me.

A friend and I discussed this at length in Vegas after a morning spent with some gun nuts, I think he hit the nail on the head when he said they seem to have a hero complex and just can't wait for the situation to arise where they can shoot someone to "save someone" its ridiculous. I pushed one on what it would take for him to draw, his response was basically 'if he saw a guy punch a woman'!

Not just that, guns is so deeply engrained in their culture nothing the government could do will ever change it. Anyone with Foxtel flick it to Discover Science and quite often there are shows about guns and military, they are in just about every form of medium, tv shows, movies, video games ect...

The only change will come if there is a huge cultural shift but that will never happen, more and more tragedies will keep happening with the rhetoric of "shit happens"

I don't understand the "guns are scary and nobody should own one" mentality equally as much as the "I need a small armoury of fully automatic rifles with hollow point ammunition to defend my home!"

Same here - the problem in the US is the number of people who firmly believe the bolded portion.
Of the guys I know in Portland quite a few of them don't have a small armoury of fully automatic rifles....they have a large armoury!!

That's the thing though people aren't all 'nobody should own one' but the justification that most Americans use (OK I'm generalising), is something along the lines of what glitch01 said earlier which is wank.

I don't want to get in to the "criminals don't obey the law" philosophy, but, specific to America, gun free zones are a silly idea.

That fact such a thing needs to exist is even worse, but it is silly.
