Get around cricket

Lara's retirement followed by the 20/20 crappola revolution yeesh

*Remember staying up late as a kid watching that test series 95/96 in the West Indies the first we won in zions over there it was freakin' brilliant, what happened to that vibe cricket had

Yep. As a child of the 80's cricket was half a step below Aussie Rules for me.

Loved watching it, playing it, poring over stats etc. Now I could barely name a couple of players in the Australian XI.

Yeah for sure
The fact ICC still haven't set up some
Best test nation trophy even if it's worked out every 5 or so years

Enough of this ponting/border v enter foreign name now

Ambrose, Walsh, McGrath, Warne, Lara, Akram, Waugh Bros, even Chris Cairns lol.. miss em' :hearts:

Liverpool's 2013/14 was probably my favourite season of any sport ever. Port 2013 probably a close second, 2007 and 2014 behind that.

Was nuts. Every game was high scoring on both sides and Suarez and Sturridge, mostly the former, pulled the inconceivable out of their asses with astounding regularity. Pure heartbreak not winning that season.

Now if we're talking about pointless games...

Even apart from all the meaningless T20, does anyone remember the ODI series result when Australia went to India two tours ago, or when the West Indies played Pakistan in Sharjah?

Apart from the Ashes and the World Cup, cricket's always being played but nothing ever seems to be on the line. It's like perpetual friendlies/trial games.

The biggest issue with cricket in 2015 in terms of entertainment is doctored wickets. The home ground advantage for the good teams has become so great that unless you're comfortably superior, you'll probably lose an away test series.

T20 is the biggest who cares format in the history of sport, and it's just added to that feeling that nothing is ever on the line. Tests are really all that matters.

But they need a test tournament, not just the boring #1 ranking. It's sort of like boxing at the moment, but instead of a single belt, you have a belt for every opponent and you pass it back and forth as you win. They really need a structured, rolling test tournament held over a couple of years where you play everyone an equal number of times and have finals etc.

Anyway NBA basketball is all about momentum. You can work so hard on defence and come up with an epic turnover steal or block and really, it's only saved you 2 points, or about 1% of the points that will be scored in the game that day.

But if you are better for longer, you'll force more turnovers, finish more of your shots, win more of your games and then put yourself in a position to win a championship.

I really feel like the NFL, as much as I love it, needs another 4-6 games a season. 16 games is crazily low for such a massive sport, and if you have a poor start and fall to 1-3 or 1-4, your season is probably done. There isn't enough time to make it back given that only 12/32 make the playoffs.

It's brutal.

I know we have issues in the AFL because 18 teams doesn't fit into 22 games, but 22 games is a really good season length.

International Rules just pips it

That's not really a competitive sport though. T20 works well at club level, and even at state level for getting people along to games, but at international level it's boring as batshit. 1 guy has a good game and you win. Teams don't matter.

And a proper Test system for serious marbles will never happen because all the money/power lies with the subcontinent where Twenty20 is everything and Tests are roughly as popular as hamster racing.

I agree I f****** hate it, it's made 50 over cricket redundant and it will never recover & the one day international World Cup should be the pinnacle of limited overs cricket.. should never have been allowed at international level complete cluster ****

At least that has the benefit of the games best players all together in one team. T20 is largely a bunch of no names who have one good season of cricket to become stars before fading back into obscurity.

Especially if you lose your quarterback for 4-6 games with a broken collarbone :(

i don't think goals has anything to do with entertainment. you can watch a basketball game finish 131-132 and just feel ripped off that you saw over 100 "goals" but were taken on this emotional rollercoaster that ends with some bullshit decision and a 1 point game. in footy when two teams score over 100 each it's like we're too spoiled by goals to appreciate them, also there is probably not a great deal of solid defense going on so what's the fun in watching two teams score until time runs out? you fight hard and win a game 1-0 and you were taken on an emotional rollercoaster that doesn't feel like it ripped you off.

don't agree with the footy part. Our Essendon game was good example, little defensive pressure resulting in a shootout with a shit team that was made to look more competitive than what they due to weight of opportunities, but sit on my dick if it wasn't entertaining, at least after I take my "I want Ports to win by 20 goals every game and Schulz to kick 10" glasses off.

Same against North Melbourne, and unfortunately Showdown 2 and Carlton

Oh man. Imagine the insane pressure of a test final.

Also, a quarter of games resulting in a draw is just far too high a proportion.

It would also be interesting to see the stats since they introduced 3 points for a win. That made a big difference I THINK.

Seems like its made little difference to the historical average but a big drop at the time (which was mid to late 70's) (edit: 1981)

I guess professional attitudes in the 70's made it harder to score...defending became acceptable, the European style, rather than lumping the ball forward to the tall striker to nod in or down to the small forward teams started passing.

So ah, I'm tossing up whether to name my NBA fantasy team the Raleigh Otters (because Goodfellas HAHA OH TRIBES) and with my interest piqued, Google autocomplete came up trumps...

Raleigh is pronounced RAH LEE, so you are better going with Rayleigh.

Eh, we lost that match because Rodgers was to stupid to realise that we should have been playing for the draw the same way Chelsea were in the same game. Instead he made the team play fast attacking and high risk football which played right into Chelsea's hands.

Had a bad feeling about it in the lead up, but we'd done all kinds of miracle work all season to make a win possible. The loss of Hendo couldn't be understated too.
