Between this, Beasts of No Nation and the new Mad Max it's been a great year.

They all have that feel that not many movies do these days, hard to explain, Apocalypse Now-ish where the atmosphere just sucks you in. Shot in harsh conditions, no shortcuts or green screens, only natural lighting in the case of The Revenant. The actors are actually put to work and you can feel it in their performance. Watching The Revenant and BoNN is exhausting.

The scene where Agu's village gets caught up in the government, rebels fight was incredibly intense to watch. It was just so bleak.

Didn't feel BoNN was exhausting but definitely for Mad Max! Oh man what a joy to watch just exhilarating action and manic piece. Definitely needed a breather watching it.

4-6 are classics and always will be to star wars fans but very dated and ....kiddy compared to the new one.
"Classics"
"Dated"

Doesn't compute really. They definitely stand up today, and TFA is far less dark than Empire. It's probably around the same as ROTJ for "kid friendliness".

They stood up when I first watched them as a kid maybe 10 - 12 years ago. Is there anything different between then and now really that would make them dated? What's dated about them exactly? All the CGI has been remastered.

Considering TFA is essentially ANH 2.0.

If anyone got through more than half an hour of "The Ridiculous 6" on netflix you deserve a medal... Adam Sandler movies straight to netflix from now on is probably a good thing though
Don't know about the Ridiculous 6 but I'm hanging out for the Hateful 8.

Also, you campaigners have now made me want to see the Star Wars movie.

Actually, BMW is right about TFA being darker. What happened in ESB to make it so dark? Luke loses his hand? Han gets frozen in carbonite?

In TFA, you've got stormtroopers massacring a group of defenseless villagers right at the start, the villain committing patricide and actually killing Han, Finn getting a lightsaber wound to his back and sending him into a coma...the list goes on.

The only reason ESB would be considered darker is because of the emotional investment in the characters from the previous movie and because that's how you tell a story - you introduce the characters (ANH), put them in the worst situation they could possibly be in (ESB) and then get them out of it (ROTJ).

hey man I am a Star wars fan ....i love the old ones always will....but they were made with the premise that lucas wasnt making a dime off the movies.....he made his money off the merchandise and thats why it became kiddy......hence why episode 1-2 were arse....and 3 gained credibility

now disney has the rights....they have stayed true to the lore and story telling of it all....

Empire is dark thematically. It's all about betrayal and helplessness. Luke has to choose between his Jedi dreams and his friends, but even when he chooses them he can't help them. New Hope is black and white. Empire adds in lots of shades of grey.

Jedi goes back to being a good vs evil kids movie. Which I love.

Force Awakens has
the massacring of the innocents as a plot device for Finn, but overall it's much more New Hope or RotJ in theme than Empire. I mean the massacre isn't really any different to what Anakin did to the padawans really.

It's less black and white, I guess. Violence itself isn't really "dark". Would Attack of the Clones be considered dark with the sand people butchering?

I guess because it covers the themes of temptation and falling to evil. The Empire - the evil faction - has the upper hand the whole movie. It's less heroes save the day against the baddies and more about the personal story of Luke and his development as a person. That cave scene. The lightsaber duel with Vader, where he just gets toyed with.

Dark is an ambiguous word for this, perhaps mature fits it more.
