Henry would still get a word in if he was sitting on the bottom of the ocean with a mouthful of marbles... still like him however.

I love meaningful, thought out guitar solos.

Malmsteen and Vai do nothing for me.

John Sykes on the other hand.... What an absolute beast. So underrated.

Sometimes the more simple the guitar solo is the better it sounds, I remember a mate showed me a video of a Dragon Force song, the guitar skills where phenomenal but they were playing that fast it sounded shit.

Yep - it's all about the riff for me.

Have you watched the second series, if so any good? Thinking about watching today.

I haven't, pretty much based on the overwhelmingly venomous feedback.

Back to Van Halen, it is amazing the guy has never written a great guitar solo during a song, but his solos themselves during instruments are great. Then he goes and would rather play synthesizer. A real enigma.

****sticks in matching shirts singing shit unfunny songs.

Hopefully they can't afford tickets to the final.

It's true though. You can't understand the shit they say more than half the time, but I still love it for some reason.

More about the instruments than vocals to me. I'm old school in that I prefer singing, but love the music that comes with the growling territory.

I generally prefer a mixture of clean vocals and growling, when I was younger and 2edgy4u I listened to more growling, but as i've gotten older i've been enjoying stuff with cleaner vocals - which is good because a number of my favourite bands gradually moved towards cleaner vocals in their releases as I grew up.

Growling/screaming is more like an additional instrument to me rather than being like vocals

what a bunch of pussy sell outs

Whatever happened to the rock n roll frontman?
Being a frontman is about so much more than singing.

like all the greats, your Angus etc Eddie isn't about the 2 min wankfest virtuoso solo in songs, it's simply fills in the song, it's always been about the song first and foremost , whether to get you fist pumping and foot tapping, driving with sun and the wind in your face or grabbing your girl(significant other) and letting them know your feelings, he has nothing to prove, he changed the face of the guitar, got rich, lived too hard, suffered kicks in the guts, got wasted and insular.

Now he's in his 60's playing with his son and can still mix it with all comers, it's not about who's the best, the mentioned names can run rings in ability/speed etc , it's what feels right with the tune, people like to pigeonhole him as a guitar god gunslinger, he's a musician , it's his life, not a glory hound/ look at me rock star, his comfort zone is his band with his brother, 2 peas, without the other it's the end.

As a guest star jammer he's terrible, his style is what fits with his music, in Australia all they're known for is shitty pop ballads or Dave's over the top antics, so really no point trying to convince perceptions , music is a whole different beast now but just like all the greats from previous generations, the innovators etc, Eddie and Van Halen have their place

One thing I really hate is those core bands that scream full on and then change it up into such a glammy, horrible, nasally chorus. Shits me to tears.
Couldn't agree more.

...

IMO, Eddie has never written a solo that comes close to You Shook Me All Night Long, which is up their with Comfortably Numb and Stairway to Heaven, and there are at least another half dozen AC/DC songs that have killer, memorable solos that could stand on their own.

Was going to post this in the Port club thread, but in an effort to not derail it further, I'm putting it here.

Trying my first Coopers Dark at the moment. Am enjoying it thoroughly.

It's primal.
Like being caught in a rock slide with boulders bouncing around you (& occasionally connecting). An assault on the senses. Not a fan of metal, but recognise in some I've heard excellent/clever musicianship. Love the growling; always makes me laugh
