Gnarly is the word that comes to mind.

Damn stargate is a great film. I'm not sure how to feel about the sequels though that are being made, given it invalidates the equally good TV series.
More sequels? I have all the TV show boxsets. Loved it. They are doing more stuff?

Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin who made the movie have announced they're doing 2 sequels that ignore the TV series.

Whoops, just googled it to link a source, and turns out they have changed to a reboot trilogy instead of direct sequels.

I've been following it closely and they are chucking out the TV series [Emmerich and Devlin are reported to LOATHE the TV series] and remaking the first one and 2 sequels "right this time".

I love Stargate so I'll give the first one a shot but my love came from the series not the movies.

Sorry to quote, can't tag on my phone.

My mother was talking to me this morning about my great nan, how she was very active in the sporting community playing and managing many sports teams and clubs. Reminded me of that funeral I mentioned the other day, that Les Murray gave a eulogy at. Mr Alagich was too a great ambassador for many sports. He believed it was the great equaliser and bridged many gaps. He formed the first ever multicultural welcoming club in Australia, where currently my aunty is president. Through his tireless efforts involving himself in every sport under the sun, he eliminated much prejudice in the community and society which I believe led to Broken Hill becoming the most diverse and welcoming place in Australia. People rag on it as backwards bogan country but it really is, thanks to the work of these people. Wog, aboriginal, women, gay, everybody was even on the sporting field and then they became equal off it as well, breaking down barriers when most of Australia was seeing things in black and white still, but not on tv cause that hadn't arrived yet in Australia.

I thought of you, and how here we are, brought together, welcoming you to our Port Adelaide family, because of our love of our club, from opposite sides of the earth. It is a beautiful thing. As I type, millions are forgetting their differences to come together over the Superbowl. Sport is good.
Hey mate, I was on my phone when I read this and ended up not replying it properly. But I wanted to say I entirely agree with the sentiment of that post. I think sport as an important cultural expression mostly reflect society but can also be an avenue for change.

One of the best books I've ever read about sports is The Boys of Summer, by Roger Kahn. It tells the story of the old baseball club Brooklyn Dodgers (they were later moved to the West Coast and are now the Los Angeles Dodgers, though most of the original Brooklyn identity of the club has been lost) at the time of Jackie Robinson's initial seasons at the Major League Baseball level. I'm not sure if you're aware of Robinson's story, but he was the first black player to play major league baseball in over 50 years and opened the door to many more with his success (he was once National League MVP and won a World Series in Brooklyn). At the time of racial segregation in the US, black players were confined to the so-called "Negro Leagues", and Robinson was very important in changing that scenario.

One of my favorite quotes from that book (and there are many) is the following:

By applauding Robinson, a man did not feel that he was taking a stand on school integration, or on open housing. But for an instant he had accepted Robinson simply as a hometown ball player. To disregard color, even for an instant, is to step away from the old prejudices, the old hatred. That is not a path on which many double back.
There's also this passage telling of an incident when the Dodgers traveled to the American south where racism was even stronger:

As the Dodgers moved into infield practice, taunts began. Fans started calling Jackie Robinson names: “Snowflake,” “Jungle Bunny,” and worse. Very much worse. Some Cincinnati players picked that up and began shouting obscenities at Robinson from their dugout. There Jackie stood, one solitary black man, trying to warm up and catching hell. Reese raised a hand and stopped the practice. Then he walked from shortstop to first base and put an arm around the shoulders of Jackie Robinson. He stood there and looked into the dugout and into the stands, stared into the torrents of hate, a slim white southerner, who wore number 1 and just happened to have an arm draped in friendship around a black man, who wore number 42. Reese did not say a word. The deed was beyond words. “After Pee Wee came over like that,” Robinson said years afterward, “I never felt alone on a baseball field again.”
And to talk about sport uniting people from all over the world - I just met faquito and his girlfriend this morning here in Rio! We had a great chat and he gave me a Port shirt (my very first one!) :)

I absolutely loved the movie but I never really got into the series.

The movie had this really unique and, for lack of a better word, alien feel to it that I just didn't get from the series at all. The characters all seemed a bit dumbed down. Obviously it's pretty difficult to match Kurt Russell and James Spader, but I just didn't like the first series and never got into it.

I've always felt like I was missing out a bit so i'm really looking forward to something with Devlin and Emmerich running the show

You guys are indirectly making me hungry for KFC and it's not even 8am.

I think I'm gonna have to get rocket league.

My steam name is mjlane.

It's basically soccer in a giant cage with rocket powered cars that can launch themselves into the air.

I didn't know how much i'd always wanted this until I started playing it.
