Is EPL a) no where near as good B) not as good C) as good d) better than it was in the 90s?
Depends on the context. I don't think it's anywhere near as exciting or open, but there can be no doubt the overall standard and professionalism has risen across the board.
Some of the 90's teams who always seemed to survive from year-to-year with a couple of quality players surrounded by bogstandard squad bods (Coventry, Wimbledon, Southampton) would be absolutely stuffed by their counterparts of today, let alone the upper midtable/UEFA Cup regulars. Whether that's made for a superior product is doubtful, fans of English football used to criticise Serie A at its zenith for being too slow and methodical, but that's the price you pay when you boil the game down to a science.
I'm reminded of the anecdote from Liverpool's Spice Boys era, where Razor Ruddock was in the gym eating a bacon sandwich and reading the newspaper. When alerted that one of the coaches was coming he quickly tipped a bottle of water over himself and did a temporary treadmill sprint. He was promptly held up as an example to follow.
Shit like that at a top-end club would be unheard of today, and if it did happen you'd find yourself playing for Celtic or Boro pretty quickly.
