It is the jarring aspect I am talking about, not the ridiculous events. Nor am I suggesting it shouldn't be done, what is initially jarring in art helps acceptance in real life

The Finest Hours was weak as soon as I see the Disney thingio I feel I'm in for a lightweight adventure.. Bana taking small parts now I doubt he had 20 minutes screen time in a 2 hour film.

It's not meant to be realistic. It's a fairytale or a fable. The movie isn't about the flaws of the main character, but their virtues. It's like Superman - you're not meant to relate to him or identify with him - you're meant to aspire to be like him, in the classic Messianic sense of an example of perfection. Whether it's a female or male is irrelevant because really, that hero could be anyone. And that's the whole point - a story that makes the bad guys flawed and the good guys pure.

Zack Snyder tried to make "realistic, flawed" characters with Man of Steel/Batman v Superman, and the movies ****ing sucked because they were no longer superheroes, but just normal people with extraordinary powers. Who wants to see thousands dying because of some superpowered fistfight?

Movies like Rogue One will never win an Academy Award, but then again, they don't have to. Not every movie has to be some cerebral morality tale with compelling characters that challenge what the difference is between wrong and right. Sometimes it's nice just to go into a story where the bad guys are bad and the good guys are good.

He played the self-conscious, paranoid, crazy guy so well you just know that's what he'd be like in real life.

I loved when he was in the recording studio with P Diddy and playing his sample tapes.
For me, that was the moment it became very clear that he was taking the piss.

You actually prove my point - Anakin is flawed, so even though he starts as a hero he falls into becoming a bad guy. When does he actually get redeemed? Five minutes before the movie ends. Obi Wan has no flaws, so he remains pure and always wins, even in death. Palpatine, Tarkin - they all have the character flaws of arrogance and hubris. Harrison Ford wanted Han Solo dead because his flaws were only superficial which made him a shallow character that had no real motivation to be selfish, hence why he "has no friends, he has no family." (At least in the OT)

Without the pure Luke, Vader never gets redeemed. It's about the love a son has for his father and vice versa. That's the main arc of Star Wars - the plot is redemption, but the principle is that love conquers all.

When I was doing my apprenticeship one of these legends was found in the work loo and would not flush away, so someone made a little pirate flag and stuck it in it.

It depends on the role with this for me. The Force Awakens jarred as Rey was so perfect at everything, but of the recent lot of female heroes I haven't minded Divergent or Terminator Genesis. And from TV Game of Thrones has one of my favourite female heroes in Arya. Where it jars most is when you get a lead without a weapon in hand (or a superpower) taking down opponents that you know would snag them like a twig. At least Game of Thrones (or more accurately GRRM) has Breane able to match it with any man by virtue of the fact she is extremely tall / strong for a woman. Although I'd apply the same criteria largely to male roles (outside the 'complete suspension of disbelief' type movie that is almost any Arnold movie), where it's not meant to be pure popcorn action where you disregard the laws of physics (and bullets).

Though I'll still go with after the obligatory Arnold as the quintessential action hero, that Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, remains as one of the best action heroes of all time. Though I'll still go with after the obligatory Arnold as the quintessential action hero, that Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, remains as one of the best action heroes of all time. If you want to talk only one franchise then she tops my list. Realistic (as much as can be given the plot) as human, no superpowers, not perfect, but kicks the shit out of the aliens, without insulting us by having her take them down with her bare hands.

It's a great series, with the first being one of the best horror movies of all time (am I cruel father for looking forward to seeing my sons jump the first time they see the Alien pop out of the stomach?), whilst the second is one of the best pure action flicks made.

I'll say though, that despite Aliens being an action flick, I much prefer the extended edition, where Ripley is told her daughter has died of old age. It makes the whole Ripley / Newt dynamic be something meaningful, rather than it appearing to be a stereotypical 'female, therefore must have maternal instincts' it comes off as otherwise.

Obi Wan is massively flawed, he is as responsible for Vader as Vader himself, even the original trilogy somewhat acknowledges this, that is why he has to sacrifice himself. Yoda is similar here, hence his exile.
Solo shoots first and is a criminal under any government, that's pretty flawed by most standards. People can't stand him so his only friend is a wookiee whom he accidentally saved. Nobody likes him at first. He may have shot in self defense, but it was clearly not his first kill and he showed no remorse, why pick such an occupation?
Luke is arrogant and petty...I think we are also about to see his mistakes.
Leia is headstrong and impetuous (something that results in her entire planet being wiped out).

Kylo Ren exists due to bad parenting, they acknowledge that too.

It's why the OT is so much better (without going into the god awful writing and casting of the prequels). The characters are flawed, but they aren't the over the top caricatures of flaws the Prequels have. It's also why The Force Awakens is annoying for going so far the other direction, with no flaws for Rey. And outside of a short lived flirtation with running away rather than helping, no real character flaws for Flynn (he's just not perfect at everything he touches almost straight away as well like Rey).
