I did a business degree years ago, as a mature age student. Had the same problems as you. A good 1/3 of us were mature age, working etc and tried in one topic to get our randomly allocated groups changed so on one assignment we worked with like-minded, motivated, competent people. After a few bad experiences we wanted to bypass the 18 yo's for reasons you cover well.
The lecturer said no, that we were doing a degree teaching management skills and here was a chance to try and make the deadweights in our group work effectively. Damnably good answer, at least it made working with the non-contributors slightly interesting.
When I detected and reported the plagiarism (i'm talking copy and pasted with hyper links still in the text and all) in my group and then the whole having no idea how to reference issue, I got told to "educate them of what is expected" and then when a foreign student wrote completely illegible stuff I got told to help him improve his writing skills. I wasn't sure whether the University was doing the teaching, or if I was. This was a Masters level course, so this means that this person had progressed through a Bachelors course to get to where he was today. This made me excessively angry. It's also the main reason I never attend any of my graduations. It's ****ing worthless because every dickhead can get a degree now and there is absolutely no pride in graduation.
If he tells me I can't change groups or do it on my own officially, I'll just do the assignment myself and tell the other group members to go take a holiday as I get them a good grade. It will be easier that way. Uni doesn't work on so many levels, completely shit experience from start to finish for a bit of paper that helps you get a job.
