I think, as with most things in life, the truth is somewhere in the middle. Yes housing prices are ****ed and shows no signs of slowing, the job market is more competitive than ever and required prospective employees to jump through more hoops like Uni that cost $$$, the rich get richer, poor get poorer, etc, but interest rates are low, there's a lot of (optional) shit floating around these days that didn't exist 40 years ago that we don't have to spend money on, wages have also increased in line with cost of living or close to it.

Locally (5015). Unaffordable.

You could live in Virginia or Gawler, but those savings will be destroyed by the commute costs (subjective and objective).

That's crap. My missus was single working two jobs earning maybe 55k before tax managing to pay off her 230k house alright on her own for years before we got together and I moved in and now share the budget.

It's doable if you wanna work hard enough for it.

This map clearly shows that only the extreme northern suburbs are actually affordable. This is in Adelaide which is the MOST affordable capital.

Pople who complain of the affordability have a clear argument. Your basic choices are Elizabeth or the country. Which is ridiculous. This is not a normal spread, other factors are causing this to happen (negative gearing being one).

Kids change everything.

This is the problem and what inflates the market. If this is peoples sole reason for working, which it becomes, then everything gets ****ing daft.

The affordability is calculated on a median priced unit an not a McMansion against the average wage.

I'd say the cost of rent these days is pretty outrageous. I was paying 320 a week, which is pretty standard down south. Certainly makes it difficult to save for a deposit. If I was single, I don't think I would've managed it.

Don't forget tattoos from head to toe and before the last one is dry they're already planning the next.

Can't believe you missed my "sucks nitro" Mad Max reference.

You're a fraud.

Where is the real edgie and what have you done with him?

And you need to rent because those who buy to let have inflated the market (with government assistance), it's a vicious spiral.

How is the heat map of Sydney looking?

Yeah look, I'm leftist by nature but all this "BAWW COST OF LIVING" shit you hear today is absolute muffcabbage.

Sure, council rates and utilities will always be an unwelcome whack for lower socio-economic types, but by the same token, there has never been greater access to welfare of all kinds (i pay tax and have kids, give me my tax back and some AND maintain health, education, roads, police and military pls) and even your average povlov is usually replete with multiple of the following: brand name clothing, Foxtel, 3 or 4 wireless devices, wi-fi, a flatscreen TV or two, a fridge full of booze, smokes, non-generic foods of all descriptions.

Having grown up poor and seen my mother work her fingers to the bone to cling to her home when interest rates were 17-18% - indirectly self-inflicted mind, because her choice of men (chiefly my father) was ****ing terrible - those roughly 35-40 and below who think this a tough economy or a capitalist dystopia are freaking kidding themselves.

As with any given generation there are genuine battlers who are struggling to keep their heads above water, but by and large it's the cost of luxuries rather than living that are the primary issue.

The differences between 'want' and 'need' get more blurred with each technological trend

Actual facts disagree with you.

Lol A -League??
Is this the purest known form of Harry Redknapp?
Last week, Australian A-League club Central Coast Mariners announced that Harry Redknapp would join the club as a football consultant. The Mariners have Peter Storrie as an Executive Vice-Chairman, who was the CEO of Portsmouth during the Redknapp years and subsequent decline. Jobs for the boys.

Mariners CEO Mike Charlesworth expressed his delight at Redknapp’s appointment, describing how Redknapp would visit “on at least two occasions during the season and hopefully more during the off season”.

The only fly in that ointment is that Redknapp doesn’t seem to have got the memo. On Talksport, not only did the new football consultant refer to the club as the ‘South Coast Mariners’ – it’s so hard to shift Sandbanks from your mind – but he also spoke about just how many times he would visit his employer.

“No, no, I won’t be going. It’s a long way. Thirty-odd hours on a plane. I came home the other week and it took me a week to recover. It’s a long way but it’s a fantastic country when you get there.”

Only Redknapp could get paid as a ‘football consultant’ for a club and not even be bothered to learn the name. Or go.

"Buy to let" to where I see the current problem.
It used to be borrowing for an investment property excluded you from the normal interest rate i.e. you had to pay a premium to do so.
Not every average joe could afford this so people with multiple properties were not so common.

Fast forward to a decade or so ago and you can not only borrow at the same rate as someone trying to get their first house but also get tax breaks for your trouble.
This is where I see house prices have jumped more so than the normal rate it should have.

Almost 30 years ago I brought my first place at 3.5x my gross income, my son just got his at 4.25x his gross income and I think the difference could easily be attributed to the tax breaks for "investors"
Incidentally the lower interest rate he pays compared to mine decades ago works out as pretty much the same portion of our take home pay goes to the banks (just 25 years apart)

My parents on pretty damn mediocre wages (book keeping and factory labouring) never had to save to the point where they couldn't afford two kids, the latest TV, PlayStation, etc, renovations (including a pool...luxury!) and the occasional holiday. Neither of them went to uni. Why are millenials being asked to live without luxury? It's 2016 in a developed nation ffs.

It's not about being asked to live without luxury.

It's about pissing and moaning and not being able to have the luxury and necessity, as if living beyond one's means should be a constitutional right.

Can't believe you missed my "sucks nitro" Mad Max reference.

You're a fraud.

Where is the real edgie and what have you done with him?

I got the reference, I just didn't draw attention to it. Like old war buddies passing in the street, a discreet nod to each other as we go about our day.

But of course a lot of getting a better paying job is about who you know and people struggling to make ends meet will probably be time poor and can't attend uni. I can't speak for getting into the housing market but people I know years ahead of me have struggled and continue to struggle (no they aren't bogans spending all of their money on JD and Crusty Demons merch). Meanwhile many boomers sit on investment properties through little risk via negative gearing while those below them can't even get into their own homes.

I know you are not making this as a blanket statement, and neither am I. However I worked 30 hours a week in retail while doing full time uni partly internal and partly external. Time is not an excuse, again, if you want it enough you make it work. I put in three really hard years combining Uni with Work while maintaining a mortgage - but it's been totally roses since - I've now even completed a Masters while continuing to work full-time. Oh and I dropped out of School in year 11.

As for the first sentence, that's a big cop-out and you know it, carn. Those who put in the work get rewarded (most of the time). Saying that jobs go to those with contacts is true, but it's certainly not the case all the time - and this has been going on since the dawn of time so it's not a new concept or new challenge that young people are facing. The biggest thing I can advise re: Uni is to choose courses or degrees that include work placements. You're seriously likely to get a job out of them if you aren't shit.

None of my results have been that "Ps get degrees" tier bullshit either. I've got a scholarship from the Uni and also a cash award for performance - and I ****ing hated my degree! Work hard, desire to achieve. I know not everyone has the same motivation but those that don't are commonly the ones that whinge about their lot in life.

You know what the Director who gave me my first job offer post uni said when I asked her "why did you offer me a job?" she said: "I liked the fact you had worked at Dick Smith for 5 years solid, that shows commitment and drive. You can get a degree that shows you can learn things, but it's nearly impossible to teach attitude and drive." That sticks with me.

That's the mean for pae not 5015. Semaphore, Largs, even E'ton are offset with Taperoo, Ottoway, Osbourne etc. There's affordable housing in pae, just no one wants to buy there.

Even if I had the coin to buy a house close to the city I couldn't think of anything worse tbh, I like being close to the hills.

I could see myself buying a house in a place like Stirling down the track.. not exactly cheap either lel

My parents raised two kids and said goodbye to a third on the dole! We still had TVs, Nes, Snes, N64, gameboy, footy boots every year or two, housing extension. Dad had all the latest tools for his cash in hand handyman jobs and good quality hardware isn't cheap. The only thing we didn't have was a car, we drove the VK Commodore til 2006, and at no point was any of it on credit, loans, or did involve debt.

Phenomenal really, in hindsight.
