Would you prefer communism over our current system?
It's not that easy to answer that question because the reality is that wouldn't happen without a painstaking decades long process first and is equally exposed to corruption as history has shown. I like the idea of a socialist democracy.

I'd prefer we just move away from the neo-liberal approach that is widening the gap and robbing people of much needed public services.

My knowledge of the complexities and nuances of economic ideologies is limited though so I'm not the right person to answer this question.

My take on the current system boils down to:

Yeeees Mr. Dylan, everything stinks.

Can't he just prefer that our current system was fairer? That's an ok position to take isn't it?

He can prefer whatever the **** he likes.

It was a question not a commitment.

Talent, hard work and risk taking; three characteristics not necessary when making money in the world if these stories are anything to go by.
It's just a hell of a lot easier to put these traits into play if you are resting your head on marm n' dards pillows in north adelaide at night instead of arnee sue's cold floor in davo park.

Must. Crush. Capitalism.

What is your point Janus?
No matter how many hoops you jump through it will always fall short to who you know, not what?

If you can't recognise the inherent inequity in this persons life... Well you already admitted it. What are you trying to argue? That equal opportunity to succeed is working? Funny way to go about it.

My point is that life sucks, and you play the cards that you are dealt. Complaining that someone else has a full house while you have a shitty pair of 2s is just gonna drive you insane.

Then again, my personal philosophy is to flip the table.

The problem seems to be people expect much-needed public services while expecting welfare as a right (even double-income families).

It's far easier to gut health and education as a whole than it is to individually take what 'taxpayers' (see attached quote) believe is their hard-earned money away.

Does the system have to be rejigged as a whole - ie. to make the Murdochs and Reinharts of the world pay their fair share - of course.

But on the other hand, we just had a government brutalised for trying to close the loophole that saw mothers double-dipping on paid maternity leave (from their employer and the government).

"Ah well good luck to'em!"
"We took it and gave no f**ks lol"

Yet these same people will soon be bitching about class sizes or having to wait 6 hours in emergency because their local hospital only has 1 consultant on.

At some stage there has to be a broader buy-in than just lipservice, while everyone from all walks of life is just in it for themselves.

I just wanted to highlight this part as it is such a great point.

We can look at overseas examples for guidance all day, but they will just not fly here without a significant cultural shift.

Portia mentioned Scandinavian socialism earlier, they've got their shit sorted, but will Australians accept the heavier tax burdens that accompany such a system?

Not in my lifetime.

it's not hard to see the system is rigged.

The system has always been rigged.
The system will always be rigged.
The system was designed to be rigged.

After a while you start to realise that it is actually rigged in your favour, and yes, even for our friend from Q&A.

When taking a global view, yes.

Here's a thought experiment for you: if you had the power to equalise every single person on the planet's financial circumstances with the press of a button, do you think your current standard of living would increase or decrease?
