They wanted John Bush from Armored Saint, who later joined Anthrax. He decided at the time to stick with Armored Saint who was the band he formed with his close friends. He's one of my favourite singers. Here he is jamming with them at their 30th anniversary gig:

I could that if you were talking about Mustaine but Hetfield is just a really good metal vocalist.
