That was just the order they charted during the year. American Pie was up there for 5 weeks, same as Imagine and Amazing Grace. Ernie for 2 weeks.

Popcorn 8 weeks and Puppy Love 6 weeks.

The top 4 on sales in order is given in Wiki as

2. Without You
3. Popcorn
4. American Pie

American Pie as a single was an anomaly because it was split over two sides. Afficiandoes just listened to the album version. I can't listen to the single when it is played on radio.
