£85,000,000.... There's some ridiculous money that gets thrown around in soccer..

About 50% is the share of TV revenue you get for playing in the Premier League, the rest is increased sponsorship, increased shirt sales, increased season ticket sales either more and/or price hikes in season tickets and other new revenue streams you don't get in the Football Championship League.

This article has info ie a table on how all 20 clubs shared the 2010-11 TV monies - £952 million.

....

The English broadcast income for clubs is generated in three parts: 50% shared between the 20 clubs equally, 25% in facility fees and 25% in merit payments which depend upon where a club finish in the league table. Facility fees are paid to each club every time their matches are shown on UK television, with each club being guaranteed a minimum of ten fees.

Liverpool want to follow the spanish model and the big clubs get more.

In the EPL the top team in 2010-11 got 1.54 times what the bottom team got. In Spain and Italy where individual TV deals are done with the clubs it was 12.5 times in Spain and 10 time in Italy.

What's the merit payment and why is West Ham's so low compared to everyone else?

You didn't read closely what I cut and pasted
25% in merit payments which depend upon where a club finish in the league table.

No idea about individual clubs.

Going the other way (relegation) would hurt massively.
How would a club manage that sort of drop in income?

thats why relegated clubs lose all their top players when they go back down because they get signed on ridiculous money whilst in the premier league as the club hopes they stay up and when they don't they have to get traded.

Early yesterday morning I was doing some bleary-eyed flicking through the sports channels and stumbled on the FA Cup final. I've never been big on soccer but it was a major final so I watched it anyway and was taken aback by a few things. 1) the sheer passion of the crowd especially the Wigan fans after the win, it was amazing. 2) how entertained I actually was despite it taking 93 minutes for a goal.

So I've decided I'm going to get into the EPL starting next season (inb4 soccerfaglol) and I need a team to support. I'm just indie enough that I didn't want to support one of the big 4/5 but I want a team that has good history, is fairly safe from relegation and may have a sneaky chance of success. So, after extensive research I've narrowed it down to either Tottenham Hotspur or Everton but I can't decide from there.

Are there any Spurs/Everton fans who want to ultimately convince me? If not I'll flip a coin :)

Stays away from spuds. They are a huge club with massive funds who generally underperform considering the huge fan base and budget. But they have Gareth Bale. The guy is amazing, think he may have won player of the year. I like Everton but they have lost manager David Moyes to ManUre. Get on Fulham.

There's a concept called parachute payments whereby in the 3-4 years following relegation you get an increased level of distribution compared to other clubs in the Championship that haven't been in the Premier League. You would think that it would create a significant disparity in the Championship but it still conitnues to be an incredibly tough and tight league. Recent history would suggest money doesn't always equal suggest that you'll bounce, for instance Wolves getting relgated from the PL last year and the Championship this year. Leeds were in financial strife and did the same. There's a fair bit to say that momentum and cultural issues can really sting. On the other hand there have been a number of clubs in recent history go with double promotions in 2 years. Norwich and Southampton being two recently.

So if a club gets elevated to the Premier League, how long do they get before the possibility of relegation hits?
Is it just one season or is there a honeymoon period for newly elevated clubs?

There is no honeymoon. Bottom 3 sides every season get relegated. There is a list of relegated and promoted teams in the following wiki page. Most teams only last one or two seasons in the premier league.

Wins first title in 44 years...1 year to the day, sacked. Wow.

Apparently an overqualified unemployed bacon faced rag wants the job.....

Handled poorly imo Roberto deserved more respect than he got but money talks and bullshit walks.

Would be such a 'massive' step down though ;)

You need to jump on the Toon Army bandwagon my friend.

Newcastle United.

We had a very poor season this season, league and Europe, which was a massive disappointment after the season before, finishing 5th.

Black and white, the Magpies, most passionate supporters in the UK, always have the best away crowds and will out sing any other clubs supporters.

Get on board pal, it will be one hell of a roller coaster ride, but well worth it. :D

Sorry Pres, it was meant to be a joke, Joyce.

btw have you claimed some glory for backing O'Shizzy in the "Big Suprises" thread?

You should as VP of his fan club.
