Well he knowingly consented to a program set up by his football club. He didn't "knowingly" put a banned substance in his system.

The other side to that Bernie is that under the WADA code what he signed is irrelevant he is responsible for everything that goes into his body.

Agreed, if found guilty of the peptides he probably can't get out of loosing the medal - even though I'd prefer him to keep it.

I think its beyond stupid that we live in a world where a player cannot trust the organisation he works for. If an individual took the banned substance(outside club instructions) then clearly he deserves a ban because he instigated it or at least played a major role. But when an entire squad takes it.... Does ASADA seriously expect every athlete to go out and trawl through its long list of do's and don't independently of the clubs doctors and sports scientist before the club gives it to them. Have a friggin lend. Some of these guys can barely read. (Jobe's obviously not in this category but still). No, duty of care lies with the club. Not the player.

The obesity thing is a JOKE. If he lost a medal over that I'd consider bombing ASADA myself.

Yeah, like I said - I'm all for suspensions.

All I was debating was the "knowingly" part. He didn't knowingly put a banned substance in his body. Yes, that's his responsibility and if he's found guilty, he should get suspended. But I personally don't believe we should take the Brownlow medal off of him. He earnt it - and he's backing up his performance this year.

I'm actually of the opinion that the players have been duped by Essendon and that is where their anger should lie and that of the supporters.

WADA disagree with me.

The two things aren't mutually exclusive, though. The players are responsible, and Essendon are responsible. The penalties should arrive at both levels.

The thing with the Olympics stuff is that just about every drug scandal I've heard of has been involved with the athletics side of things - running, swimming, etc. Our game is so much more than that and that is why, banned substance or not, I feel Watson earned his Brownlow last year. If it does get taken off him, I'll probably just shrug and move on, but that doesn't stop it being disappointing.

I definitely don't think Mitchell and Cotchin should be awarded the Brownlow though. If it does get taken off him, no Brownlow for 2012.

Absolutely correct mate but I feel sorry for the actual footballers. The club was looking for an unfair advantage and took it, the players were their vehicle and despite being, in the eyes of WADA and ASADA responsible, they actually appear to be almost innocent.

I think he should lose the Brownlow, but I agree with Bernie's 'it's Essendon's fault and the players are just pawns' point. Which is why I'll be mighty pissed off if Gus gets a suspension. That punishes Port (blameless) and Gus (negligent at worst), but it doesn't punish Essendon who knowingly masterminded the whole thing. At least if Essendon players are getting suspended, then Essendon as a club are suffering consequences.

It'd be pretty shit for Mitchell and Cotchin to be retrospectively handed the Brownlow. I really wonder how they'd feel.

I'd rather they didn't re-award it. Better to have a 'Brownlow not awarded' year like the NRL did when they stripped Melbourne Storm of their premierships.

Premierships and Brownlows are two different things, I'd give it to both of them

but with the asterisk on the side

If you put the entire blame on the club and leave the players alone you set a precedent for every club in the land that if you orcestrated doping at club level your players have an easy out of "I didnt know, I just did as I was told". Its not good enough.

No longer at the club:

I reckon Pearce would have gone very well for us with our current set up. Everyone else...meh.

Are we all in the same boat in thinking Jobe should keep his medal even though he unknowingly took the anti obesity thingamabob?
Nah **** him, take it away, take Hirdy's too
