I'm now 25, my BMI is in the slightly obese category (178cm tall and 99kg), I'm highly strung when it comes to my work and my uni and now I find myself genuinely fearing for my own durability. Though I have lost 6kg in the last month and a bit, and I'm continuing to lose more and eat healthily I've been going to the gym 4 times a week for the last 2 months, however I feel like now that it may be for nothing and I am genetically pre-exposed to a ticking time bomb.

There is no slightly obese category, nice try though. If your BMI is >30, you're classed as obese. Call a spade a spade. BMI is only one measure anyway. You can also measure your waist circumference. If your waist is greater than 102 cm, you need to trim it back. The fat around your gut is the worst fat possible. It's called visceral fat and it will lead to all sorts of problems when you hit your 40s.

A family history of cardiovascular disease does not necessarily make you a ticking time bomb. Anyone can be cop a massive heart attack and it's game over. It's one of the biggest killers in Australia. If you look after yourself chances are you'll live well into old age. There are usually signs prior to cardiovascular events and it is important to recognise these signs and not to ignore them.

You don't need to go nuts with diet and exercise. Many people tend to go to extremes with diet and exercise and find it is unsustainable. Take small steps: decrease your meal portion sizes, stop drinking soft drinks, cut back on the junk food (and energy dense foods in general), increase your vegetable intake. Take walks, take the stairs at work. Try to get your weight down to the low 80s if possible.

All of this is pretty much my aim.

It's not easy Feel, as Chiwigi said: worry makes it worst.
Focus on the positives in your life, there are many, here are a few....
  • we live in Australia rather than, say, North Korea, Sudan etc- be grateful for that
  • we are living in a great time and not in, say, the 18th century with wars, disease, famines
  • millions of people around the world wake wake up each day without food or a roof over their head
  • if you have any money in the bank you are better off than over 90% of the world
  • if you can read, over 2 billion people cannot
Re diet, apparently doing simple things like cutting down on sugars in your food helps.

Going to the gym after sitting down all day does bugger all for your health. Better to have intense sharp workouts for a few minutes a day.

Stay positive.:thumbsu:

Bzzzt. Crock of shit. 5 minutes of exercise isn't going to do much for you. If you want to lose fat, as opposed to losing weight in general nothing will help the Doc more than going to the gym and getting in a weight session.

As for the diet / exercise go have a look on the health and fitness forum, it's one of the few other sub-boards on BF not populated by people being dicks. The thread on intermittent fasting is one I'd recommend.

It is strange but who can doubt the science?

Dr Feel can I call you tons of fun now?

Cos your posts are always fun and until you get fit you weigh tons.

I'm at that time in the year for fitness where footy season is over, and I tell myself that I get a couple of weeks off and then I'll get back into it.

Every year without fail I don't get back into it until February.

Does this mean that when I lose the weight I can have a sig that says "The Artist Formerly Known As Tonnes Of Fun"

Saw Matty Broadbent, Danny Butcher and another person I couldn't put a name to playing tennis over at the court that I play basketball at. Was going to say g'day but I thought if I were an AFL player I wouldn't want randoms coming up to me in my personal time.

**** Broady is a lot taller than I thought he actually was.

I would ****ing LOVE ransoms to come to me. A little extra cash would be great.

Feel, you will die anyway, we all do. Don't worry about it. Whether we live to forty or eighty we are pretty much insignificant. Most people couldn't even tell you 3 facts about their great grandmother, let alone a single one about their great, great grandmother. We are born astride of a grave, what we do is irrelevant, just enjoy the time you have and don't ruin other peoples time.

One thing guaranteed to lower your life expectancy is worrying about dying.

You told me you were fine with me doing it!

I actually thought you said eyebrows initially....

Got a new (old) Eyehategod cd today + 3 t-shirts and they chucked in a heap of stickers.

If I were you I'd stop carrying on and get on with saving the President.
