My parents favourite shows to watch with dinner are Big Bang Theory and Family Guy. I tried to introduce them to shows like Community and Arrested Development but they didn't "get" the humour.
Each to their own and all that but I just do not understand it.

Parks and Recreation is a good middle ground. Very funny show but still simple enough that people shouldn't have trouble 'getting' it.

Unpopular opinion time: I don't find Seinfeld funny whatsoever. Everyone I know with similar comedic taste to me loves it, but I can barely raise a smirk.

Do you like Always Sunny, or Curb your Enthusiasm? They are both similar to Seinfield IMO.

Seinfield has some great moments, but the characters are generally annoying (apart from George Costanza of course).

Going to Vietnam in about 3 days and the only word I know is 'You Mothergoose' in Vietnamese. I think I'm going to be Schapelle Corby'd or wind up in a ditch somewhere.
Friend of mine does a bit of work for a football team there called the Swans (I think?) and I think we're going to be checking out a couple matches there late Jan. Should be good!

Miscarriages caused by agent orange in the war remnants museum in Ho Chi Min is probably the most disturbing thing I've ever seen. Tiny little things with too many limbs in jars.

Vietnam is absolutely fantastic though. Enjoy mate.

My wife is convinced I develop tourettes if my mother is within a 500 metre radius of me.

Last time she visited she said "you and your brothers don't talk to me much anymore?"

I responded "How the **** would you know, you haven't ever shut up long enough for one of us to say anything"

Short visit that one.
I moved 16000 miles away for similar reasons. We've never got on better!

I love always sunny!

Yes, and that's what I mean about people with similar comedic tastes to me. I like other shows which are similar to Seinfeld, I just don't find Seinfeld funny.

Curb is essentially an R-rated Seinfeld, except with Larry cast in the role of George, for obvious reasons.

I remember people raving about Seinfeld and I'd watch an episode and ... zilch. Then for whatever reason I watched a few in a row and it clicked. Won't go on but same thing happened for me with Big Bang.
Seinfeld is dating rapidly now and is affected by people being over-reverent. But the ones where Larry David was actively involved are generally the best, and I must say I LOVED the Curb Your Enthusiasm episodes about the fictitious Seinfeld tribute where Larry actually worked on screen with Jerry and the other 3 Seinfeld stars.

I believe that means you travelled twice around the Earth to now pretty much live next door to her. Or you live in space.

Count me in the never got into Seinfeld crowd. I've tried but it just hasn't caught me. I'm sure I'd love it if I watched it at the time, but I can't be bothered catching up on it now, not when there is so much beauty in the world.

Enjoyable for a committee designed sort of show. The producers from the American version of The Office made this and brought in their very successful concept of rotating characters through. Of course Amy Poehler as star is often linked to her friend/past colleague Tina Fey and so I'll say Tina's 30 Rock is far superior.

I never liked Seinfeld when I first tried to watch it growing up, then I used to watch the re-runs and really got into it, now I couldn't care less. It was pretty funny, but I think its horribly dated now.

OldSchool comedy
BlackAdder
Porridge
Bread
Fawlty Towers
Cheers
Beavis and Butthead

NewAge comedy
Eastbound and Down
Louie
Outrageous Fortune
Small Time Gangster

This how your post should have read...

I thought that was implied.

Yes that was hilarious. Though with all those Seinfeld stars, I thought JB Smoove was the guy who stole the show in some episodes.

Yeah it was something that I only really got into after it finished and I was a bit older. The finale was on TV last night. That was horrible.

sums me up pretty aptly.

I think it's the whole working in retail thing. It does change the way you view the general public.

I worked at a bottle shop during Uni. I would never be able to do it again.

There was an episode of Seinfeld that summed up the whole show, where George and Elaine were forced to go out together without Jerry because he was sick...and all they did was laugh at the stupid things Jerry did. Then when they had to do it again, they couldn't laugh, because they'd already talked about all the things that were funny about Jerry.

It's the same with the entire concept of the show. Once you've seen all the episodes, it isn't funny the second time around, because most of it is observational humour. Close-talkers, low-talkers, people who don't wash their hands before cooking...that sort of thing. If you've seen it...that's it.

A show like Blackadder or Black Books, on the other hand, is timelessly funny because it's about the witty repartee and back and forths between the characters. In other words, it's the characters that are funny, and not the situations they find themselves in.

Got it in one. Brilliant.

Black Books is seriously underrated

Most British comedy is, I think in part due to the lower number of episodes per season.

I love the IT crowd, Red Dwarf (especially the first 2 seasons), and Father Ted are my favorites along with Black Books (which I should re watch!). The Mighty Boosh is also incredible in small doses.

Do people like Moone Boy? I enjoy it but its not as funny as the others I've listed.

they don't seem to overdo British comedies either, they also seem to finish strong like Black Books, IT Crowd or The Inbertweeners.
Whereas most of the American shows I have enjoyed got really terrible well before they finished (Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, Scrubs, Boston Legal, 2&1/2Men)
