Just had a Random Thought :
What about a Random Thoughts Thread for the over-60s in our ranks?
Years of age, I mean.

Then I had a less-random thought: I would probably be the only poster, and the only reader.

Still reckon it's a good idea.
I do love my solitude.
And making new friends every day....

What have you done with Rexie J?

.... What about a Random Thoughts Thread for the over-60s in our ranks? ....
The age thing is interesting. When I view people's footy-related posts I often wonder about their age and experiences as a footy fan. I clearly remember Choco tumbling Jack Cahill as coach but there would be a whole raft of posters here who would not even know Jack was our first AFL coach. Not that that is important in itself but it must affect your appreciation of being a Port supporter, the extent to which you remember our full AFL journey.

Pfft... as if over 60's would even know there is an internet.

I still haven't quite got over 1990. Quite a lot of our list weren't born in 1990. The whole footy experience must be different to younger folk who grew up with Port in the AFL.

When I was a young'un, I barely followed the AFL. I know that Michael Malthouse coached Footscray in the 1980s because the AFL tables website says so. But I didn't follow the VFL closely or care about clubs like Footscray.

I think it's fair to say that as a fan my outlook was much more provincial- even more so growing up in Whyalla- Adelaide was so big and exciting and Melbourne was just beyond my imagination. The Bennett Oval was as far as I got back in the day, and we'd watch the SANFL replay on Saturday nights.

Even more unimaginable to young'uns was that Glenelg was a good side in the 80's. Their back to back flags now seem even more unlikely then the Crows back to back flags.

So my wife buys me Sonos gear and I download Spotify and I'm expecting it all to work.

It doesn't.

Can someone come over in the next half hour and sort it out before I start throwing things?

Just the sort of point I was trying to make, and you can see why Lockhart Road would have said that stuff about a thread for the over 60s. This is despite spookism doubting such people access the interweb.

All you said there was true. Victorian media confuse pre-1990 VFL with AFL. VFL just wasn't that big in SA (or WA) when I was a kid, the local leagues were still far more popular. But from the 1980s the Vics showed the guts and vision to expand their comp and the rest is regularly manipulated history.

Check the old thread on this.

We only knew about the VFL in the early 80's because of "the winners" on ABC but we weren't usually home from the footy to be able to watch it anyway.
SANFL and VFL in the early 80's were on a par (apparently Craig Balme thinks 1984 Norwood would have beaten Essendon that year), the SoO games were generally quite tight and when I left SA in '87 I didn't know they played footy in Tas and ended up following Carlton in the VFL because Craig Bradley played for them.

Surely not. I'd be one of the youngest (intermittent) posters on this board having only finished high school this year, and the bolded part seems kind of baffling.

Yeah probably fairly exaggerated on my part. Needed to come up with a better piece of PAFC history than that to differentiate our older and younger posters.

Max James isn't Roger James's dad.
