Crazy, isn't it, but no. It was soccer first.

The 'soccer' nickname only came into being in the late 19th century (a la Rugby = Rugger), whereas references to the game as 'football' - which is to say, the game is played on foot rather than any reference to the principal mode of interacting with the ball - date back to the middle ages and beyond.

It was also named as such because it was a game of the common man, whereas the nobility would be playing something similar in the form of polo on horses. So it was more a reference to the fact that you played it while on your feet instead of on horseback.

I always assumed the term referred to the spike in domestic violence when the Rangers and Celtics played i.e. "Sock her" ...

Correct.

Was that for pie?

Yes, I agree that the term "Football" dates back to the Middle Ages, however I was of the understanding that it related to a variety of games played with "Foot" and "Ball". Soccer, while relatively new in its use was used to describe the specific game we now know.

Anyway, it was a mere random thought akin to the one I had earlier tonight when eating my soup. I recalled a memory of my earlier years when I was eating a ration pack with a "FRED".

Quick trivia: The -ez and -es at the end of Spanish surnames means 'son of', much like -son does in English, O'- does in Irish......
As does Mc or Mac in the Scottish brand of Gaelic. Now the Russians .......

Okay, assuming I'm no longer obligated in any way to post football-related posts: I made this. It used to be an underwater flame ejaculation penis, but I figured that was too dirty. Instead, it's in Bikini Bottom (where Spongebob lives, for those uninformed) and there's a turtle that sort of looks like a stegosaurus with Gene Simmon's tongue as spikes. What do you guys think?

Oscillate is a weird word.

I like the way the Americans say Orifice.

'Terminator Salvation' was a fair effort. It would have been a much better 3rd film in the series than 'Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines'.

Theory: Tom Logan is single-handedly responsible for us being shit.

Port with Logan in the side: 1 win, 8 losses. Only one of those losses by less than 37 points. Only win came against Melbourne in the game when they kept giving it back to us. Losses to teams like Richmond and Freo at home and the Bulldogs and GWS away.

Port without Logan in the side: 4 wins, 5 losses. Our only losses in that time were againsst all of the current top 4 teams and against Essendon who won 8 of their first 9 games IIRC. Only one of those losses was above 26 points. Two wins by 8+ goals.

This is not a random thought. Enjoy your ban.

I wish this thread was back on the main board. We had football stuff in it!

Correct assessment - I only re-discovered the best thread on our board by accident - it will die - unfortunately.
