Dear phone nerds,

Do either the Iphone 5 or the Samsung Galaxy S3 have a fairly simple possibility to be plugged into a laptop to be used as if they were a modem? So I can use the mobile's data allowance for stuff on the laptop.

My htc legend has an app where I can setup a wireless hotspot, this means any wireless device could log onto my hotspot and use my connection, so if you had that you could use your laptop to log onto your hotspot, sort of like logging in at maccas

I use the personal hotspot on my iPhone to browse on my iPad if I'm not at home to use my wi-fi connection.

I've used it with my laptop a few times when I'm away. But only for light browsing, as I only have 2gb data allowance on my phone.

Portia, I have the S3, yes you can set up the device as a personal hot spot.

You can also do this with the iphone, or at least I could with my now obsolete iphone 4.

Yes. On iPhone it's called a "Personal Hotspot". It's as easy as connecting something via bluetooth.

Takes half a second.

Via USB, Wifi or BlueTooth.

Both set up through the settings.

S3, iPhone and pretty much every phone on the market has it now.

Known as Internet Tethering, Hot Spot, Internet Sharing etc. Takes about 3 seconds to set it up.

Yes, but, if your laptop has an older wifi card it may not be able to connect to your phone.

My 3 yr old dell can't connect to my iPhone but my almost new Asus can.
