Random football related question that came to me over the weekend: has there been a player who has started as the sub but also got a Brownlow vote yet?

Yeah so don't drown your sorrows after seeing a loss in Melbourne with beer, cocktails, sake, more beer and more cocktails when you have an early flight home the next day.

Wimp!

Can anyone recommend any accommodation in Geelong or nearby? Going to be heading over for the match with a mate of mine. And yes I know the match this week is in Adelaide, I mean the one in August.

I stay at a mates place. We played footy in Darwin together and he is a ripping bloke.

He won't let you stay though.

Are all the announcers on holiday?

They're doing a best of the last 20 years Top 100. So they are busting out music from when they were rocking some shit hot music...

I'll be sad again when it finishes.

In reference to the announcers comment - I live in a country town where the local radio announcers are truly horrendous (also shitty commercial radio), so I suck up triple J most of the time as because it is the lesser of two evils, however when The Doctor is on, I go silent if I have no CD's or MP3's to listen to

Any music older than the average `youth' shouldn't be played on Triple J

Kingsmill becoming director of music was the turning point.

I've been working on my top 20 for a couple of weeks, tough work!

I absolutely agree and i've felt this for a long time. He lets them play some absolute garbage. I feel like the quality control was a lot higher with whoever was in charge beforehand and it's regressed from a top notch predominantly indie rock station to Nova MkII.

I often wonder how many awesome bands have been toiling away playing at pubs over the past decade because JJJ would rather play some electronic pile of crap or hip hop.

As someone who has just started listening to Nova, I can assure you that Triple J is better for music.

Don't think so.

Sometimes hindsight is awesome.

Jay and The Doctor talk about exactly what you said, right before becoming DJs for Triple J during the shit era you mention.

I'm sure this is true but unless i'm listening to Tom and Alex or Hack, I just put play music from my phone in the car now.

I don't want to listen to electronic stuff every second song. It's not really for me any more.

It seems that we are the same person.

That said, not sure if it counts as electronic in your books, but I love the midnight juggernauts latest work.

**** I hate that self-pretentious w***er.

Yeah they're quite good. I don't mind a bit of Two Door Cinema Club either. Electronic is fine, just not every song, and not when they barely ever play indie rock any more which used to be their bread and butter.

That said I haven't listened much for a few months.

Was Jason Davenport the sub against the eagles that one time?

Did the sub rule even exist then?

I'm sure a sub has gotten votes though.

Sub rule didn't exist then.

It is easy to listen to indie rock, buy a guitar, refuse to learn how to play it, and thrash away at the strings while growing a beard.

So i dunno where to put this
I have just recently started my umpiring career, i've done U8s and U12's

on satdy was my first game of U10's

Now U10's has a certain "hold and restraint rule"

its a bugger to explain but i'll try my best

The "restrainer" can grab the oppositions player Guernsey (when he/she has the ball), and restrain (being not influence where they move but just going with them) if they do this for three seconds it is holding the ball (as umpire i have to count out loud to remind the player they have three seconds, i normally give them a good five seconds before i pin them)

If in the process they steal the ball from the opposition player, its a free kick against them

They can only use there hands to "hold" them, if they use there arms, its a free kick against them
if they restrain the from the front, regardless if its only their hands its a free kick against them
if they "influence their direction in a way that can lead to a "sling" tackle" its a free kick against them
If they bump them in any way its a free kick

Now i was on the weekend and will continue to be very lenient on this rule, as i beleive as long as its not an actual tackle, there is no contact to the upper body and the arms aren't being used to tackle well keep the game flowing and play on (i got a great review on the weekend by a supervising umpire)

I just need to vent this out, its the worst rule out.

Here i am in senior footy, being trained to tackle with my arms (we do tackling drills holding tennis balls to make sure we get in close and use are arms to tackle them)
To steal the ball if i can, it should be my main objective in 75%+ of tackles
To influence and control their direction and use their own weight to half sling them to the ground.

How is this rule helping develop senior footballers and the correct technique and philosophy of skills, i know every junior will only have these rules for 2 years of footy, but everything adds up. We talk about the lack of proper development at grassroots level, this is a key reason, shocking rule modifications. I understand we need to protect the kids and their undeveloped bodies but this rule is going to make a generation of tacklers soft
Why not allow a solid bump like i had when i was U10's 8 years ago, any upper body contact and its a free against, once there is two bumps on the player with the ball its holding the ball

or allow no contact but allow for a basketball style "steal" (currently isn't allowed until U12's) 10 years ago when i was playing it was allowed at all levels (would probably allow more contact than a basketball style steal

Or allow an arm wrap and hold, what encourages a player to use their entire body in a tackle not just their hands

Honestly its a shocking rule and i can't believe they see any positives of it, hard to umpire, hard to learn, useless to use after the two years of U10 footy you have

Vent over.

THoughts?
