For some reason, reading the last few posts makes me think of Rohan Smith.

I couldn't really believe it at first (I remember seeing him play for the time I think it was 85 when we got smashed by Torrens (WTF!) at Footy Park, as a 12 or 13 year old) that we could have a young bloke in our side, who was completely bald.

Can't recall ever finding out the cause of his baldness, but I tend to recall it was cancer related but not sure. Perhaps may have been alopecia, which would be a horrible condition for a young (or not so young for that matter!) person to have.

It wasn't cancer but most likely alopecia. I recall it was a condition and that is the likely culprit. His hair used to grow back in tufts occasionally, I think he just shaved those bits off. I'm sure I've seen a picture of him at junior level with hair. Will check old Magpie News mags.

Actually as I was writing the message before, I was thinking he had a bit of hair on occasion especially early on in his career.

Horrible condition, and the "Uncle Fester" jibes wouldn't make it any easier either.

So the dog who never left my side in some of my darkest years was put to sleep today. He was 14 years old, rottweiler cross german shepherd. Though in my recent years I haven't seen him much as he has been living with my mum and I had moved out. I'm utterly distraught. This was the kind of dog that my mates are crying about losing too, he went on all of our camping and road trips.

I suppose the kind of funny part about it, he did his ACL a few years back and had LARS surgery and was very spritely. However, now he did the ACL in his other knee, and he wouldn't make it through the surgery and medication. If there was a way to go, doing an ACL is so very football of him. Sorry about your loss DF. That's the worst thing about having pets, and we have always had some, when they go.

I still miss my mutt. Had to be put down just over a year ago due to his degenerative hips. Made it to 14ish years as well.

I had a dog run away when we were living in Adelaide, I'd had him since I was 4, and I was 9 at the time. It was a stormy night and he dug under two gates and ran away, even now I feel sad thinking about him.

I especially remember this few week period many years back when he was very sick and the vets couldn't work out why. He was one day from being put to sleep, and I slept on the floor with him (he couldn't get up on his favourite chair, and couldn't get down if we lifted him up there, so we put some blankets and soft stuff on the ground) and told him not to give up. He was breathing very shallow and fast, next day the vet suggested one last shot of medication and bang, that same day he was running around again like nothing ever happened, though he had lost a lot of muscle mass and his face was very gaunt. (He didn't entirely recover his full facial features). It was amazing to behold it, the vet gave us a word of warning that it may return and to be prepared for that.

He went on another 9 years with no ill health besides doing his knee.

Had a Basset Hound (Bazil) put down when I was 14 and he was the same age as me at the time as we grew up together.

Edit - I then had a Golder Retriever cross Cocker Spaniel (Chester) who incidentally did his knee twice. He too was put down at 16. Horrible horrible feeling.

I have two dogs of my own now, and I have already begun dreading it and they are only 2 years old.

Then my daughter bought a pup when she was sharing a flat with friends; but asked us to take it as surprise, surprise the landlord wanted it gone. It has been the delight of our lives but a few months ago (it is 3 y.o.) it developed a spinal issue and was briefly paralysed. At f^&*($#g ridiculous cost it has had neurosurgery and is 75% good but what heartache!
I did have this plan that when this dog was 6 we would get a pup and so when the older one died we didn't have the sudden emptiness. So much for trying to manipulate fate. What malevolent deity makes such great companion animals and gives them such a short lifespan?

I had the same cunning plan then wound up getting a second dog 3.5 years after the first one. It was a misjudgement in that the family went to see some pups - with the inescapable progression from 'We're not going to buy one!' to 'Oh aren't they adorable'. But it worked out ok because the older dog was still young and probably more tolerant of the puppy. Not thrilled but they're good together, Ridgeys are pack dogs anyway.

Little known fact, one of the reasons humans like dogs is because dogs have eyebrows and so have anthropomorphic facial expressions. Cats don't have eyebrows and so appear more aloof and let's face it, evil.
