I want Watson out of the side, otherwise I'm not too fussed with how it is.

Yeah, the phoney war against England has papered over the fact that we don't have the established batting depth we've had for virtually a generation. Clarke is the last of a line of hero batsmen that stretches back to Border..... with clarke at no.4 we really are low on options

I really dont know who else could bat at number 3 smith showed during the test coming in at 6 he can absorb pressure...number 3 is usually reserved for the best batsmen but with clarke at no.4 we really are low on options
I wouldnt say that at all....I thought at different stages all the top order contributed bar bailey....watson did ok but a bit downhill and impressive at times with the ball....Yeah, the phoney war against England has papered over the fact that we don't have the established batting depth we've had for virtually a generation. True but its still seen as the most important position in the batting line upThe best batsman at 3 is a bit of a myth these days... Kallis, Lara, De Silva and Tendulkar all batted 4.

Thats why Ricky Ponting was so great.
He was a number 3 in the traditional sense and a bloody good one.
I don't reckon it's ever really been the case. The best batsman at 3 is a bit of a myth these days... Kallis, Lara, De Silva and Tendulkar all batted 4.
What number did W.G. Grace bat at?
Whatever he liked - at least he did when I used to watch him.
I know you're older than lots of people on this board, but you're not that old.
You know, young Mr Speaker, you're right.
That was in my previous life. I went by the name of Fred Spofforth.

Am into Stephen King and 11/22/63 - thanks for recommending it.
Best read of that sort since Christine.

Best batsman would generally always bat at 4.
Eg.
- Boon at 3, Border 4
- Richardson or Gomes 3, Richards 4
- Omar 3, Miandad 4
- Jones 3, M Crowe 4
Or at shield level:
- Love at 3, Law at 4
- Nobes at 3, Lehmann at 4
That's not to say that this applies 100% of the time, but I reckon more often than not.
Just finished reading Under the Dome.
I have no one to blame but myself, but that was tripe - especially the 2nd half
