Clint Eastwood always mystified me, sure he has the tough guy persona, but in action movies I always thought I could take him, even in his youth. Always has that look like he's about to fall over with exhaustion when he throws a punch, bit like Roger Moore. Acts like Tarzan, fist fights like an uncoordinated Jane.

I find average action movies infinitely more watchable than average movies of any other genre.

My thoughts with Clint Eastwood, is that it isn't about the physical toughness, its the sheer tough presence of Eastwood, the few words his characters have always impact, that coupled with the 'eyes of death' stare and the .44 Magnum....yeah he's tough all right. Granted the punch-ups aren't as believable as a lot of tough actors, but he still gets the point across

I was just remarking on the fact that Tom Cruise usually gets a bad rep as an actor but many of his roles feature him being a pretty tough customer himself and executing his physical scenes very well. As an action actor/star he doesn't get enough credit, while other guys like Matt Damon star in one action franchise and everyone licks them up.

IMO Tom Cruise is one of the finer action stars, just beneath the top tier of Eastwood, Stallone, Arnie, Bronson

Even Liam Neeson is trying a bit too hard reinvent himself as an action hero... there's a difference between being an action star and being an actor in an action movie, and I reckon Tom Cruise has earned his stripes as an action star.
