The reason Joffrey is evil is because he is born of incest, it is explained at some point in the show with the line "They say when the targaerians (dunno how to spell) had a child the gods flipped a coin" but yes it probably isn't readily explained - which counters your point about it being easy to watch. I think you just don't give the show enough credit because it doesn't explain the complex stuff which is going on, which is a perfectly reasonable way to go about it.

Also the characters don't really fit into "good vs evil" the way you say it, they just all have different motives. It is a lot clearer in the books because you directly get the character's perspective, which gives you a lot more understanding than what the show gives. The books are very good if you are interested in reading them, but I'd only read the first before watching season 1 & 2 and I read it in like 2006 or something. I understand why you'd think the characters are simple, but that is because they are largely undeveloped through season 2, apart from Jon, Arya, and Tyrion. Everything becomes much more developed as the story goes on, and yes reading the books does add a bit more, as it should.

That was the thing - I made it clear that I was giving my thoughts on the show up until this point. I just watched Episode 9 and it was pretty good - finally some decent battle action (which was helped by the episode focussing on one story and not 10).

I'm giving the show every chance to do a Breaking Bad - I didn't much care for the first 3 seasons, but the fourth really improved and then the fifth knocked it so far out of the park it was frightening. It still doesn't mean I think the first 3 seasons are anything special though (although I do think they are probably necessary for the fifth season to have the impact it did).

And I got the incest thing, as I posted, I just think it's really weak. In a "oh we need a character that everyone hates, so we'll just say yeah he's ridiculously evil cos by chance it happens". He's still my favourite character though.

I think you are overstating things a fair bit here. Essentially Joffrey is a massive sadist and sociopath, and incredibly spoiled on top of that, I don't see much more explanation necessary than that as far as his character is concerned. He is a child remember, so he doesn't exactly need a terrible life story to be a shit person.

As far as everything else is concerned, if you don't love Tyrion and Arya as characters now, then its hard for me to say that you will like the show more later. Though perhaps you will enjoy its complexity later on.

He is that way he is because his mother wouldn't subject him to the upbringing that she and her brother had (their father as you know is a very strong character and a tyrant). The incest part is a fantasy nod to medieval superstition and the explanation from that.

So he needs some sort of story to explain why he's such a prick. The one they have his weak. If you like it, more power to you, but it's weak.

Well it's not clear at all. Tywin's barely mentioned Joffrey in 2 seasons. Hell, Sarah Connor is barely shown with Joffrey, but I'm just meant to pick up on the fact that his entire childhood she spoiled him as a rebellion against her father?

Which is odd how CLEAR it is, considering that there's other posters suggesting it IS the incest that made him who he is, as said in the conversation between Tyrion and Sarah Connor about incestual births, the Targaryans and Joffrey and likening Joffrey to the Mad King. Why would they muddy the waters with that if it's so CLEAR that it's his mother's rebellion and spoiling of him that has turned him into the sadist he is?
