1. City of God - great film, great acting, great atmosphere etc.
2. Original Star Wars Trilogy - groundbreaking
3. Saving Private Ryan - hugely underrated because of its mass appeal and PG type war, that makes it accessible.
4. In Bruges - well written modernisation of waiting for godot.
5. Apocalypse Now - masterpiece.

Top 5, no particular order:

1. Casablanca
2. Top Gun
3. Gone With the Wind
4. Fight Club
5. The Running Man

Loved the dialogue in old movies, it is an art that seems lost in modern movies with the licence these days to use profanity as means to explore moods and events. One of my favourites is John Wayne and Catherine Hepburn in Rooster Cogburn. I enjoy listening to their arguing

Yes. Great movie no one ever really knows about

Platoon
True Romance
Usual Suspects
Waynes World
Spinal Tap

Thank you man, thank you so much.

I shit you not I sang that song at the pub this afternoon.

Platoon and Full Metal Jacket probably two of the best war, or anti-war, movies ever made...
Good distinction, they are war movies. Good films amongst a huge heap of good war movies over the decades (and a zillion so-so ones, or worse). IMO Saving Private Ryan is the close to perfect war movie, scary realism plus good v evil. The same team made the brilliant Band of Brothers series. Apocalypse Now is deservedly famous. Re anti-war I can only think of All Quiet on the Western Front and really the book is more famous. I'm trying to think beyond American films for the top ones but I can't.

My favourite book, must have re-read it 5 times. Not much of a film.
The old version, not the new. I reckon you need to separate it from the books to appreciate it.

I must be the least musically-inclined person on earth. The only bands I've ever been truly passionate about are Mr. Bungle and The White Stripes. Not too much overlap there, aside from hipster associations I guess. I mean, I like music, it just seems to be less important in my life than it is to most other people.

Then again I think I enjoy movies on a deeper level than most others, so it all evens out.

Excuse the philosophising, but I'm in an extremely good mood tonight.
