Complaining about the "cost of living" when you can get Family Tax Benefit B with a household income of $150,000.
I don't get it but I like it.

Do you think Q&A tweeters who comment on 'intelligent moderate Muslim men and women' know they are being really #patronising?

Horse racing can go **** itself.
You're on the money Schulzy, whole lotta people woulda had a had a great day watching horses getting whipped and suffering in the name of sport:confused:

Kenny (the movie not Our Kenny) showed the great untold Melbourne Cup story.

What's the survival/injury/fatality rate of wild horses?

Isn't the counter-argument to opponents of horse racing on grounds of cruelty that they are treated to a level of care and safety light years beyond those in the wild?

I'm not a proponent of horse racing - have always been no more than a casual punter "I backed number 7 because I ate a dodgy curry last night and have shat 7 times this morning" - but what's the alternative? Do free range horses not break legs/have heart attacks?

I'm not against horses being in captivity, just the idea of for amusement and the mighty dollar the horses being pushed/whipped to their extreme fastest speed which all too often ends poorly. I'm sure 'free range' horses have heart attacks but not due to some little people forcing them to do something.

They probably do, but they are also not broken, gelded and ridden by a short bloke whipping for most of their life.

If you gave me a choice of living in a hut in the country where I had to live off the land but being free or having a massive house in the city but working every hour, having my balls chopped off and having all my free will beaten out of me....I'd probably choose the hut.

You make it sound like marriage

*Yep hut me up

The first tragedy of the Cup today was Geoff Edelsten getting engaged to Gabby Grecko. Is it even legal, I'm sure he's an animatronic waxwork.

7 is always my number. Don't know the name of No.7 horse...all I know is it didn't win. Don't care for horse racing, but agree they are treated better than most domesticated animals. Also, horses are better than cats...I mean what are cats good for?

Good to see Geoff played it safe and wore hi vis clothing.

....... and not a grey hair in sight.

At least it's not the stripy hair he thought fitting for the aforementioned service.

You're right. Nature is a bitch but the racing industry is bloody cruel. Tens of thousands are bred to race, hundreds are literally raced to death every year and many of those who don't make it end up as horse meat because they're so expensive to keep.

This is the 2nd year in a row a horse has died at the MC and another broke its leg. What shits me most is that 90% of race goers would have heard about Admire Rakti's death, said 'oh shit that's awful' before getting their Verve topped up and moving on to their next conversation.
Like I said, nature isn't kind but at least their suffering isn't motivated by money, greed and prestige. Poor f**ing animals.

The alternative is motorsport and it's a little disconcerting that it didn't make horse racing completely obsolete the moment Henry wheeled out the Model A.

I guess we're not through with proving that we're the master species on this planet.

I think this is the reason why I criticise horse racing before tucking into a steak for dinner. Something about it is so distasteful. While this obviously isn't a perfect analogy, horse racing (especially on Melbourne Cup day) is the closest thing Australia has to the Hunger Games. State and media sanctioned competition where lives are risked and deaths are glossed over for the benefit of the social elite.

The way that the horse's death has been glossed over by the media and treated as secondary to the socialites and the race winner rubs me the wrong way. Imagine if the same coverage applied to other sports. If a Sydney player had dropped dead from a heart attack after the Grand Final, could you imagine the news opening with 'Hawthorn have won the 2014 Grand Final by 63 points, now let's have a look at what the WAG's wore to the big day' rather than 'player X has tragically died minutes after the 2014 Grand Final'?
