I'm not knocking empathy, I'm just saying it's not the only tool you need to interact with the world. At some point you have to call people on their bullshit, particularly when that bullshit is harmful. There's a point at which acting on empathy alone does mutate into acquiescence, this happens when you find yourself making excuses for things that are inexcusable.
Absolutely you do. I'm no pacifist.
But when you can...and we often can, understanding must come before sanction. Desperate parents believing that vaccines have hurt their children is nowhere near inexcusable. People who want to hurt babies...that is! We should still seek to understand why they want to hurt babies...how else could we avoid it in the future? If they are just evil scum then they are just evil scum. There is no acquiescence in understanding.

I don't know what job you do, but I'm guessing that you'd rarely make big decisions without all the facts and resources available at hand unless you absolutely have to...why not extend the same consideration to people?

In your pacifist scenario...my sympathetic empathy would be with those being stabbed and I would act accordingly. Empathy does not only apply to those doing what is seemingly wrong and it seeks to avoid unnecessary harm, not excuse it.

That was intended as a jocular reference, for the record.

Would you be equally understanding if an acquaintance told you they blamed their child's autism on chocolate/pollen/the Jews? Because there's as much evidence as there is for vaccines. Just because the vaccines connection is an established concept in the marketplace of ideas, that doesn't mean it's more credible than any other random connection I could make up, or any more worthy of respect.

Groundless ideas that attain an air of respect purely by dint of how widespread and long-lived they become... that's how religions get started.

I don't know what job you do, but I'm guessing that you'd rarely make big decisions without all the facts and resources available at hand unless you absolutely have to...why not extend the same consideration to people?

Indeed. But unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, if you're lazy) sometimes people reach a saturation point of stupid with alarming swiftness.

Linking vaccines with autism is fear mongering at its finest. It's disappointing that we're seeing a return of polio and measles because parents have no understanding of vaccines and the risks involved in not vaccinating your child. It's almost criminally negligent.

Indeed, plus it burdens the rest of society

The thinking behind it also doesn't wash.

All Doctors are apparently shills of 'Big Pharma' and vaccines are a conspiracy, but these same pillocks will accept any and all medical advice when their kid needs other injectable substances, such as insulin to treat diabetes or anaesthetic so that appendix can come out.

What's the difference?

Don't forget the bleach enemas!

Dude gets off train. Stands on platform. Watches train doors shut. Presses button to open train doors.

Train doors don't open.

Dude finger stabs button. Punches train door. Calls train door a "f@%khead!"

Train departs.

Dude abuses the s#it out of train as it pulls out of station...

Soccer...the football you watch when you're not watching football
Nah. Well not for me. I try with other codes but the only one I find enjoyable is American football. And even then I haven't identified with a particular team or watched with any consistency.
Still, to be fair, I'm glad no other code gets my pulse racing/breaks my heart like Aussie Rules. From October through February I enjoy a sweet Aspergers-like emotional detachment from sport. I get slightly revved up with cricket but that's it.
