Was over there late last year and had this guy ask me if we were all convicts.
I said what ever we were or are, we are not as mixed up as you guys. "How so?" he asked. Well the Queens German
your first dude is Greek and your patron saint George(the dragon slayer) is an Arab.
You can't even decide on what to call yourselves. "ugh" he says.
Well are you
The United Kingdom or
Great Britain or
The British Isles or
Albion?????
"honestly mate you've got a lovely, lucky country
but the sun has set on your empire"
To be fair, I can't imagine the British PM awarding an Australian with a knighthood on their national day :-)

Good ole Tone said at the time knights n Dames were reintroduced
they would be recognition of distinguished AUSTRALIANS
I'm sure Phil must have felt the same warm fuzzy feeling a Field Marshall would when given Sargeant stripes

^ By the way no offence intended to new posters; more a reference to how the same topics get brought up year on year without knowledge of conversations prior. We've had some BOGs sign up in the past 2 years (I'll single out Lockhart Road for the special mention ;) )

I am assuming I'm definitely one of those because I'm pretty awesome according to me

close but no cigar

When the Americans invaded Iraq some women in Baghdad shaved their pubic hair and carried placards saying
"read our lips no more Bush"

Llan means church of in Welsh so there are lots of old parish names etc. that start with it. Llanelli, Llanrumney, Llandudno....its one of the most common place name pre fixes. In Wales places were traditionally topographical, it made it very easy to find your way around :). O

Celtic and Hibs were started by Irish migrants. Scots migrants bought much of the farm land in Northern Irelamd after the Brits took over.

It is absolutely and NEVER has been the English premier league or English football league. It is The Premier League, the Football League.

It had Scottish teams in the past too. The Scots league was a geographical breakaway and the Welsh league was forced on us by UEFA in the 1990's. It was only ever going to be a smi pro at best league.

2014–15 Premier League
The Premier League is an English professional league for men's association football clubs. At the top of the English football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. Contested by 20 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Football League. Besides English clubs, those Welsh clubs competing in the English football pyramid can also qualify to play.

So everyone in Scotland is part Irish and vice versa. Why strict nationalist Ireland for the Irish or whatever? Purely cultural like you mention below?
Excuse my ignorance on these political matters, I don't really know my British Isles history.

The nationalism in each component country is very different. VERY basically.

In Wales (British) its based on socialism, language and race. The Welsh consider themselves the original 'Britons', the indigenous people of the island and bearers of the original language of the island. The English came over (from northern Germany) when the Romans left and claimed much of the history for themselves (the legend of King Arthur for example), they also committed many acts of genocide to subjugate the population, it is why Wales is confined to the Western peninsula (Cornwall for all intents and purposes is an island and considered south, south wales :)).
Wales has always been a 'socialist' country and t was a great weakness in medieval times as wealth was distributed there were no all powerful Welsh kings to call people together in times of war, a few managed but they were never granted the title King of Wales, only ever Princes.
The English, after 'conquering' Wales (they did not conquer, the many castles they built to live in is testament to that), started a tradition of making the first in line to the English throne the Prince of Wales, this meant if Wales ever tried to rise with it's own princes it would be seen as an act of war against England (who by this time by dint of being conquered by the Normans were a superpower far greater (relatively) than the USA currently is.
Wales eventually WON! Henry VII and the Tudors (including Henry VII and Elizabeth I) were a Welsh speaking dynasty. Wales joined with England then but have since been subsumed by the greater numbers.
Wales was the heart of the industrial revolution as we had so much high quality coal, but that was stolen to create the empire, the locals treated like crap and forced to change their language. Up until the early 20th Century a child would be caned for speaking Welsh in school, they would have to wear a sign around their neck for the day that was called the Welsh Not and humiliate for it.
Now we are regularly disregarded (due to small population and the fact we do not elect Conservatives). Wales has some of the poorest areas in EUROPE! Objective 1 funding required, due to the closing of the mines and the steelworks (from which every last penny was taken to London) that could still turn a profit but London have made agreements overseas as it suits London.

English (Germanic/French) nationalism is based on the pride of subjugation, of the greatness of 'their' empire and language, it is the infantile disease rather than greater freedom type. They took over the land they occupy and then lost it quickly to the Normans (there hasn't been an 'English' king or queen for over a thousand years). They are a great nation and deserve to be proud but they diminish the contribution of anybody else as insignificant due to their weight of numbers. Modern English nationalism is based on (ironic) worries about immigration and complaining that Wales and Scotland have too great a say and a chip on their shoulder over historical events (true).

This slides nicely to Scots (Irish/Dane) nationalism, the Scots see themselves as equal partners to the English and historically they certainly have been, but they receive very little credit for it and it grates. They are more than capable of standing alone but the fear mongering by the status quo prevents it. Scots banks and inventions (not to mention their soldiers) created the empire. Though youd never know.

The Irish (Irish) are different again, they are clearly not geographically required to be a part of the UK, they are mostly Catholic so there is a further point of difference. This added to the disgraceful; treatment of them (because they were catholic and not English) for many years led to violent claims for independence. NI was partitioned due to the large number of Scots protestants living there.

That is using modern terminology to avoid explaining the historical reality. Do some research rather than quote Wikipedia, learn the history and not the tidied up version that UEFA want to portray (UEFA who have tried time and time again to get rid of Scotland and Wales international teams). They cannot as Wales an Scotland (and this is why they are hated) have veto powers at FIFA due to the fact that we invented the fricking game! mOST CLUBS ARE FROM England (as is head office)so that part is correct, but what is it called? What has it ever been called? NEVER the English league, ffs the Premier league didn't even exist until 1992! EVEN THEN they did not call it the English Premier League.
You'd think SA Port fans would understand crap like this a bit better.

I am not sure what argument you are trying to make, that Cardiff don't play in the 'English' football league, but in fact in a British one?
Maybe you can point out where I should be 'researching' as everything I look at so far calls it the 'English' league. And I have most certainly heard it called the English Premier League, in fact I was living in England in 1992 when it was formed. I am also not sure what being an SA Port fan has to do with it, other than being a snide remark. You seem a bit angry though at maybe the way Wales is portrayed?

Today exactly 125 years ago, The English Football League was founded at the Royal Hotel in Manchester, becoming the first national football league in the world. Twelve teams started into the first season on September 8 1888, which would produce Preston North End as their very first champions.

We've crunched the numbers of all 113 top flight seasons (1888-1892: Football League, 1892-1992: First Division, 1992-today: Premier League). Eleven seasons had been suspended during the first and second world wars.

Since the foundation of the Football League, a total of 64 teams have played at least one season in the respective top flight of English football. Everton, one of the twelve founding members, is currently playing its 110th season in the top league, having missed only four for two spells in the second division. It is topping the list of most seasons played in the top flight.

Yeah yeah, I know, I'm a logend.

except...for this morbidly obese landwhale/manatee ranga who is talking loudly about preordering the 50 shades of grey soundtrack and how fantastic the movie is going to be. So grossed out right now.
