I remember my dad doing that once and half the bottles blew up in the spare room. Mum was not impressed. I think he over-yeasted them or something.

Too much sugar. It won't increase the alcohol content as that has been set in advance with amount of yeast...it just explodes bottles or froth/head overflows on opening.
