Have been fixing my iTunes library (replacing album artwork and boring crap like that), so had lots of photos cluttering my desktop. Must've at some stage, dragged them to the trash and emptied the trash straight away. It appears that with them, I've also dragged the folder with all of my non-uni documents/spreadsheets (some of it worthless shit, some important). Have tried using recovery software but it looks like I'm out of luck (also **** paying ~$100 for a program I'll use once). Should've backed up my laptop at some stage in the past ****ing year.

Have you tried Piriform Recuva? It's free although it wants to install crapware and it does a deep scan of the recycle bin so it might recover what you lost.

You'll never lose a file again.

There's also an app called Any Data Recovery that works pretty well.
