I was writing a bullet-pointed post about the reasons everyone has armies, and we require one. However it was starting to get extremely long and I was still going to miss a billion points.

Moral of the story is, posing a question such as "why do we even need an army?" is out and out one of the silliest things you can ask. Oh gee, I dunno. Maybe 200,000 years of human conflict?

Humanitarian responses...disaster responses...conflict responses...peacekeeping. It's not as if their one role is to kill-on-sight, and there is absolutely no way you can form an army post-invasion. There has to be a standing army at all times, no exceptions. Even the most neutral countries have standing armies, such as Sweden.

Hell, they have national service requirements! Not to mention it gives 50,000+ people full-time jobs, and 200,000+ people part-time jobs.

So we need to know how to kill to help others? And for your other points, who the **** is going to invade us?
I will finish this with if Australia were to be invaded we would be in the middle of world war three and when the nukes are finished dropping It won't matter who had the biggest army.

In related news a 400m asteroid only discovered three weeks ago will miss us by a hornet's boyparts.

As far as spending against risks to the place where we live goes
there's no doubt we're doing it wrong.

The irony of having a planet full of immensely destructive arms pointed at each other while an asteroid sails in unseen and smashes us to smithereens is something i feel would elicit a chuckle from Douglas Adams.

I liked his entire battle fleet being accidentally swallowed by a small dog "due to a massive miscalculation of scale"

No country is going to sail a few boats and offload troops on our beaches. We all know that.
But if you think having an armed forces is redundant I'd suggest you do some research into East Timor, Indonesia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. You don't even need to leave your comfy, secure home. Just do a bit of research and you'll see Australia truly is the lucky country, as there's a shitload of countries whose citizens don't have a fraction of the security and comfort we do.

OK I understand but there are not militant groups planning on deposing our government.

It's just not stupidity though Australians can offer aid in hundreds of different ways than sending armed forces into hostile countries that don't want or need us. You do realise that all of the current trouble in the middle east was caused by america over the last forty years right.
You're really being an idiot right now.

We do not provide security and comfort to the middle east how about you do a little research from the comfort of your living room about the lives impacted by the invasion of the middle east we are a cancer in these countries so maybe try again

If Holden wants a solution to their money problems, put this into production.

This is one of the weirdest opinions I've ever seen on a topic, I reckon.

Wtf it's pretty simple we shouldn't be interfering in foreign countries with an armed force which only wreaks havoc on the local populace
and no one is going to invade us because If it reaches that point it will be nuclear if we want to help in world aid create a service that can provide medical help on the ground or a thousand other things look I'm out and I have to end this crazy rant
but I can not advocate violence in any way shape or form and I view the armed forces as an archaic service that no longer serves a viable purpose to this country or at all the world
