Yeh, just sounded funny the way it was reported.In legal terms you cannot be convicted of both. Would be a contradiction of offences, just as you can't be convicted of killing someone and attempting to kill someone. It's either one or the other. Thankfully, accessing holds a far greater penalty than attempting to access anyway so it's not as though the result is beneficial for the criminal. Police will only use an 'attempting to ' charge as a backup in case they cannot prove the fundamental elements of the more serious crime.
