Tina Arena not looking so tiny in that fetching black outfit at the ARIA's. Kylie inducting her to the HOF, starting to look her age, but Tina still looks at least 10 years younger than her 48.

My mate just texted me pics and said "As she goes on a leftist rant on stage, all I can think about is Tina Areola."

To which I replied "Why are you watching the Arias you humongous ****ing ******?"

Not gonna lie all this sneanshaming has had an effect I've found myself wearing alternative shoes than my usual all-black comfies as I cannot pull off the whole "I'm above this and can ride it out" approach

The small time sleaze bags of the Australian mainstream music industry have never shirked any excuse to give themselves a pat on the back. Not doubt there will be more if this in that ridiculous looking TV biopic of Australia's favourite glorified groupie, Molly Meldrum.

Of course, Australia did once have a burgeoning independent music scene of some significant world repute. Too bad these dingbats never gave it the time of day. They were all too busy patting themselves on the back for "discovering" the Sherbert's, Air Supply's and Pat "Bob Girl" Wilson's of the world.

Had the opportunity to go to the ARIA's a few years ago and APRA awards as well.

I politely said **** no.

There is still energetic independent music produced in Australia, it's just no one can be arsed or is too tired to put the distractions of everyday behind them to experience it.

Support local music.

Absolutely correct.

It's just a shame the actual industry doesn't support local music.

It never has in this country.

It still exists, but not on nearly the same level it once did. Major record labels now run subsidiary labels purely to house their "independent" roster of bands. I know there's still independents out there but not on any huge scale.
In the 1980's there existed a very clear and stark dividing line between the mainstream and the independents. The two worlds rarely ever crossed. Occasionally a band would punch through (The Church, Hoodoo Gurus), but they were few and far between and it wouldn't happen without major compromises being made musically and operationally. Commercial radio wouldn't touch these bands. Even a huge band like Midnight Oil was considered too rough for commercial radio until their 4th album. They wouldn't go near them.
Consequently the independent scene set up a huge network of bands, venues, labels, fanzines etc allowing it to not only fully sustain itself, but thrive.
Since the breaking of Nirvana in 1991 the world changed. I'm not denying there's still good independents out there but it's not on nearly the same level it once was. And I think that's a shame.

Imagine a time when people from major labels actively engaged in local scenes in cities all over the world.. it did happen once lol and they even signed ugly folks with talent from time to time

Ageism is not great.

Tina Arena being a face of calling out ageism is bullshit.

Her visible career exists because of `Young Talent Time', the primary requisite for which was not being better than the original artist, just cuter and younger. That is her entire D-grade career in a nutshell, which always had an expiry date.

If a forward thinking twenty something wants to campaign on this sort of issue, maybe they'll have more credibility than someone who was happy to exploit the system to the fullest until it was no longer to their advantage.

And just on Countdown, Molly Meldrum, and the great historical whitewashing of their significance in Australian music lore, AC/DC made it big because they were prepared to work their arses off, firstly in Australia, then the UK and Europe, and then the US. That's why they succeeded. If Countdown was responsible then John Paul Young would've been an international smash hit too.
And while Christie Allen was lip syncing "Goose Bumps" from the ABC's Melbourne studio to Molly's delight, another ABC music program produced out of Adelaide called ''Rocturnal' was sending its mobile sound unit out into the field to capture LIVE emerging, lesser known, and more vital bands, like this legendary performance at the Marryatville Hotel.

**** off Molly.

> only has a career by being young and attractive

> complains that she doesn't have that privilege for life

> must be misogyny

> mrw

Actually it is misogyny. I am just not convinced that someone whose entire career was available to them because of misogyny has the credibility to be the new shining light. From Tina Arena, its clearly just self-interest, the timing of it solely for her own personal advantage.

Would much rather have female musicians who succeeded in spite of misogyny be heard, not those who `succeeded' because of it

I've been called a "lid" by a guy who lives in Australia - he's not originally from there I think, but since he lives there I'd imagine it's something commonly said in Australia?

Anyway, I got no idea what that means. The guy is a ****ing idiot who dislikes me for some reason, I just wanted to know what I'm being called by one of those internet hard men.
