It was in the 70s, much easier to control the moving bits, especially in hostile environments like the desert or the snow.

Not so much anymore, but that's kinda like saying we should embrace pure CGI sets because it isn't necessary to build stuff anymore just to tear it down.

Also when R2 bounced from side to side, very hard to do on machinery at the time. Easier to get a midget to rock it.
