I still bought the odd thing at Dick Smith.. cables n' crap I dunno.. JB has gone down hill too for mine it was better when it first opened of course thats when I still bought CD's n' DVD's n' Blurays, they originally had pretty good stock even found a 13th Floor Elevators boxset cheap, now their stock is as vanilla as anywhere else.

I worked at dick smith for five years in management, got out a year and a half ago. It was obvious for many years before this that this day was coming. Alot of good people I know are going to lose their jobs, and that's a real shame. Top level staff with the customers needs at heart. The talented managers and staff started bailing about 2 years ago and were being replaced from within or by people with management experience, but not in retail.

Anchorage capital who bought Dick Smith from Woolworths purchased the company for 100 million, and then only one year later sold the business to the public for 220 million. One of the greatest cons in history. I was gifted shares as a long term employee and sold them at their peak of $2.10 shortly after I received them.

The new directors took the scythe to all business operations, cutting back on staffing to levels far beyond acceptable. The store I managed was cut back to 3 full time staff and 1 casual to cover lunch breaks, and my shop floor was close to 1000m2. Ontop of this, they shifted the burden of picking and shipping online orders purely to stores, which would have been fine if not for the fact it required 1 full time staffer to be off the floor the entire day to fill them. End result was 2.5 staff on the shop floor throughout the day on weekdays. Completely unacceptable.

They gutted absolutely everything to maintain some semblance of profit, and it wasn't sustainable. They never reinvested into the business and have paid the price, not that they care. The directors made millions while staff crumbled under excessive targets and unreasonable workloads.

I foresee the NZ arm of Dick Smith continuing though, really profitable over there.

I noticed the staff shortage the last couple of times I went to DS Marion and never went back based solely on this. You just can't expect people to wait ridiculous amounts of time for service, they'll just take their business elsewhere.

Well, the four tenpacks of AA batteries I bought from there for something like $3 just before Christmas should last a while at least.

Also got some good headphones half price. Just hope I won't have to return them any time soon.

Yep. Many christmas gift cards are now null. Mcgrathnicol will serve the creditors first and everybody else second.

I know for a fact that about a month ago, samsung and panasonic were no longer accepting stock orders on credit from dse, and were only accepting cash orders. It was obvious they were ****ed from there.

In any case if I were harvey norman or jb, I would be buying those gift cards sold over christmas from dick smith so that the people can then go to their store to spend it, and have their staff sell accessories and all sorts to make further profit off of it.

A person I know had 200,000 shares worth (78k,) and he won't see a cent. Gift cards are the least of their worries.

I live with three females and have a ball, and enjoy my life because they are balanced and can take some stick, and give way amount to me. Jesus this planet has lost the plot.
