I played school cricket with a kid who was the 16 year old version of Geoff Boycott. Would wear every piece of protective equipment available in the day, but had a bat that looked like it belonged to his great grandfather and was made of balsa. Never saw him hit the ball off the square. When he bothered to hit it that is, as leaving it was the best form of defense. Did not get out too often, used to open the batting and 'hold down an end', whilst us (I opened and played 1st drop) around him either scored quickly or got out trying.

Same here. Even mentioned that to him (even though he's turned into a total health freak after a medical scare 5 years ago). Become a bit of a boring campaigner but at least he'll be around a lot longer.
