Watched The Big Short today - great movie. Different to the book, changing the names of a lot of, but not all of the main players confused me at the start as I read the book 2 or 3 years ago, but the combo drama and black comedy was well done without destroying the essence of what happened in the 3 years leading up to the financial crisis in USA which hit crisis point when Lehman Brothers crashed in September 2008. (Apparently several of the main players wanted their name changed, especially as a few of them arent that nice. Dr Michael Burry a neurologist turned hedge fund manager, the guy that first found the potential for carnage, a went to Goldman Sachs to make the first bet against mortgage securitization market, and Asperger sufferer is play as Dr Michael Burry).

Another great book by Michael Lewis who wrote sports non fiction books Moneyball and The Blind Side which both got turned into movies as well as his business books Liar's Poker written a couple years after the stock mmarket crash of October 1987 where he worked as young bond trader for Salomon Brothers, The New New Thing A Silicon Valley thing about the tech boom in 1999, Panic - Modern Financial Insanity, Boomerang and end of 2014 Flash Boys - A wall Street Revolt where he looks at how technology and high frequency trading has rigged the equity markets. I reckon there is another film in that last book.

I love how they used real people to explain the basic working of some of the complex securities, to show that Wall Street banks aren't that much smarter that the average person that they couldn't understand how they worked, it showed just how devious they are about using them. They would stop cut into the film and the celebrities would do their explaining. Very clever way to get the average punter to understand what's going on.

Actress Margot Robbie in a bubble bath drinking champagne explains how Sub Prime loans work

Celebrity Chief Anthony Bourdain explaining how a Collateralized Debt Obligation was made of shitty sub prime loans were packaged up to make a new security that was given a AAA rating.

They then uses another sexy actress Selena Gomez and a professor of economics to explain how a synthetic Collatrized Debt Obligation works whilst playing Blackjack in a casino.

But the best scene to explain it all ie Credit Default Swaps - swapping the 3 products above and betting the system would collapse, was by Ryan Gosling's character, Jared Vennett, who does the narration thru the film and is based on the real life Deutsche Bank trader Greg Lippmann. The movie shows he made about $50m out of the collapse, but in the real world he made about 100 times that.

Excuse me REH but can you please write Good Movie or Shit Movie for those of us with short attention spans?

Hull City ftw. My grandparents are from there and I have no better reason to pick an English side, so they'll do.

I remember taking Hull to the Champions League on FIFA 14 with Andy Carroll as my Golden Boot winning star striker. Top quality realism.

They were the only team in the EPL that didn't have any letters in their name that you could fill in. There's relevance!
