That's because it was a short story. His novels get butchered too much when made into movies. No coincidence the best adaptations of his horror novels have been mini-series. Gives time to build the tension and flesh out the characters, rather than be just another hack and slash compressed into 90-120 minutes. The Stand is my favourite of his one's I've read that have made it to the screen. Short of missing Harold's redemption just before he dies it was spot on IMO.I still vote Stand By Me aka "The Body" from Different Seasons as the best film adapted from a King story.. I think he does too IIRC
