New Star Wars!!!!
I have some notes.

- Rogue One should have sunglasses that she puts on when she says `I rebel', and then the guitar howls over the opening titles coming up in neon pink handwriting.
- To establish her character, the first scene post-titles should involve Rogue One driving a dune buggy on a beach.
- Forrest Whittaker should tell Rogue One that he's had enough and is taking her off the case, because she's a wild card thats gonna get herself killed.
- Later Forrest Whittaker should nod in approval while Rogue One does a stunt like he told her not to do, conveying official black approval that Rogue One is pretty fly for a white girl and also patriarchal pride.
- Rogue One should have a robot sidekick that makes margaritas and hits on storm troopers, voiced by Joe Pesce.
- Whenever Rogue One isn't on screen, everyone should ask "Where's Rogue One?"

Oh and I also cast Glenn Howerton as Darth Stantnoodle

Sorry Portia, you're about 2 years too late on the 80s revival. We've moved in to 90s territory now.
If it was 90's revival, Rogue One would be abandoned by the people she trusted, left to die in a wasteland, but through sheer grit she'd beat the bad guys and live on to forge a new life on her own terms.

Just reboot Starship Troopers without as many pretty yet gormless fülks in the prime roles

Glenn needs to be cast in some big budget films as the villain ASAP he's an incredible sociopath.
It'd need to be a franchise that is overacted a bit though, James Bond villain could work.

Starship Troopers

Starship Troopers reminds me I need to watch Edge of Tomorrow again. That's an underrated modern classic.

Starship Troopers/Aliens meets Groundhog Dog. Classic formula. Even has a bit of Bill Paxton thrown in.

I feel a sense of déjàvu here but they seriously botched the marketing of that film.

The ads I saw for it made it look like a shitty "guy is a VR/RL video game character who has to come to grips with dying all the time omg, now watch Tom Cruise running in patented Tom Cruise fashion before 50 minutes of closeups of his middle front tooth" effort. Yawn.

I happened upon it one evening on Foxtel and have probably watched it 2-3 times since. Amazing.

To use a Roger Ebert term, it has the biggest "idiot plot" moments I can remember in recent times though.

We not just kill yourself when you find out the secret and reset?

I grabbed it off the 'net for something watch a while back. Honestly didn't expect much going in, based the trailers I'd seen.
Was pleasantly surprised. I've watched it couple times since then.

Like you said, edgie, underrated.

Anyhow, on Rogue One... Didn't like it to be honest. I was expecting a man (not literally but that is the expression) on a mission type gritty war film, what that looked like was a sunny and bright adventure spearheaded by the troubled girl with the mysterious past. Again.

Relatively speaking I had higher hopes for this than Episode 7, being the first Star Wars film outside the central saga. It looks average.
I SIGHED TOO!

Happy for it to be a grizzled female veteran, not happy for it to be Episode 7/Hunger Games/Divergent again.

You clearly did watch the trailer and Episode 7 and Hunger Games and Divergent.

I have watched the trailer but not any of the others

The last female lead I have properly enjoyed was emilia clarke in terminator genisys - and I don't even watch game of thrones.

I just get a sense of jumping the shark a bit with the female leads, is it possible they are overdoing it a bit - especially since they seem to be all the same character just in a different setting. They could be doing so much better.

As the "honest trailer" suggested, Rey was great - but she is so good at everything all the time that she is actually super uninteresting and not at all compelling. I would like to see some flawed characters emerge, but it's a dangerous game because the unfortunate crazy minority of feminists (there are good ones and bad ones) will howl it down unless the character is all conquering. You can't win.

I'm just not sure they are developing and harnessing this new focus on female leads in the right way, I'm all for it but I'm experiencing some sort of fatigue to it, as I said earlier - the same character played by a different female put into a different universe/setting.

They aren't making their characters compelling and making me want to get to know them and bond with them over a trilogy etc. So much shallow and predictable typecasting to the point it quite literally looks like they are putting females in roles because it's the thing to do at the time, rather than for the story or character development. I dont think anyone wants that.

If female leads in these actiony films are jarring for you, its probably because that variation in the lead is enough to make you query the quality of the whole film and you're realising you're watching formula shit. When its a guy lead, you're so used to that being a usual part of the formula that you're less likely to query it.

In surprised you found anything to like about that Terminator film.

True, but it is also jarring when they are cast as 'war heroes' and 'elite troops', mainly because there is only mythological or extremely rare experience and examples of this.

How many war heroes or elite troops can you think of that can legitimately do the things war heroes and elite troops do in films?
