Vale Prince, like Bowie one of the great performers and for whom music was just part of what he did.

Probably no worse than any other year if you break it all down. Just guessing though. My theory is that new age hipsterism, and the baby boomer desire to keep all their favourite childhood/teen pop stars in the limelight and touring has meant we've just noticed them more because these performers have never been given the chance to slip away out of the public eye and into relative anonymity. I could be wrong but I'd be surprised if 2016 has had a marked rise in celebrity deaths than any other year.

Problem is there are more celebrities these days.

The rise of the internet has meant that, as you pointed out above old ones don't/wont/can't go away, and the number of new "stars" in all realms (not just music) means that we are inundated with the ****ers.

Bowie and Prince in a relatively short period of time (and they were two of the biggest and best) is pretty big.

I was thinking about that. Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Paul McCartney. Bob Dylan, not so much. All white men, where is my imagination? Who else? Certainly after Ferenc Paragi I can't think of any more Hungarian javelin throwers worthy of the name.

Edit: no better with imagination but Keith Richards/Mick Jagger belong there too. They really should go out together somehow.
