How that wasn't the end of Kiss I have no idea. Although I suppose in many ways it was. Are they still recording? I mean I wouldn't be surprised if they were. I think the Kiss v punk thing was around the Dynasty time. Fair enough too. They were never great musos, just slightly heavy rock 'n rollers. Dynasty was an absolute sellout so perfect cannon fodder for the punks but just prior to that it would've been Kiss v disco.

I was in high school at that time, and KISS were massive, but became a pop/disco group that everybody jumped on with Dynasty. Yeah punk wasn't big in our school, but the disco vs thing was probably more AC/DC than KISS as KISS already had a disco flavour with some of their songs, Rock N Roll All Nite and Love Gun and Strutter among others were school disco favourites if I recall correctly

I was in high school too but slightly different where I was. I was a fan of the early stuff but Dynasty made it flat out embarrassing being a Kiss fan. They weren't popular at all but I Was Made For Loving You was a different story. It was a double edged sword. Suddenly a band I and my friends liked was popular. Unfortunately for a music style none of us liked. So initially it was kiss v disco but punk, mostly driven by the success of the Sex Pistols (I know, not 'real' punk but it was what the particular kids were rebelling with) was the anti-pop style that Kiss had hung their hat on. It was around that time we (my Kiss loving friends and I) started to broaden our taste and research the back catalogues of bands I mentioned earlier like Sabbath, Purple and Zeppelin. Through that style we moved on to early Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. By the early 80's Metallica came along and with my background, Kill 'em All (which I eventually grew to love) was thin, raw and comparatively under produced which pushed us away from that style towards the more polished rock/metal bands that became the beginnings of the hair metal scene. That became such a joke it pushed me back to Metallica's Master of Puppets and from there of course your Megadeths and Testaments. FMD, I could go on and on

Even around '79 IIRC, older siblings of my friends who were Sabbath fans would give us shit about listening to Purple and Zepellin.

Black Hawks still flying over the peninsula. Out watching them and a bunch of lost boys came flying down the street on their pushies & disappear into the darkness. Cops show up, start shining lights around etc & drive off. Come back ten minutes later, I'm still on my porch & they ask if I've seen any kids. Told them they'd be long gone. They conceded they should of asked me earlier and said the kids are shining lasers at the helicopters.

Reminded me of that Jim Jeffries bit when he's doing a troop show in Iraq & he's up in a Black Hawk & some poor bugger tries to shoot it down with a Saturday night special.

The fall of Triple J suspiciosly coincided with the rise of Powderfinger.

Aided and abetted by the likes of Eskimo Joe. I get they've gotta eat, but bloody hell.

Despite my disdain for commercial radio and pop music in general I don't live in a vacuum and many of my friends, particularly of the female variety don't share my love of Death & Black metal. So when I'm with them I have to tolerate music I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to. That song was far less painful than some of the stuff I had to hear. I didn't mind it either.

I saw them on their first national tour. I was pretty smashed and it was a long time ago but they played Sabbath covers. As kids, at the time, I thought they were pretty cool. Then.......

Think Jet or Wolfmother would be a more apt comparison. Both came out swinging with massive debut albums but continual releases after that were formulaic and tonically a bit too similar for most.

Got nothing against either of the three though. I unashamedly blast a bitta Nickelback/Wolfmother from time to time.

Red fingernails was when I lost interest in them.

I'll freely admit that my memory can be poor at times so correct me if I'm wrong but that was after he hooked up with NI? I felt that his relationship with her put him on more of a pop oriented path. I can't remember their drummers name but I do recall seeing how much fun he was having gigging. Fast forward an album or two and it looked like just about the last thing he wanted to do. I got the impression that the style change was not the musical direction he wanted to go. Of course I'm speculating but I do know what it's like when you're performing music you don't have your heart set on. The big change was Johns' relationship with a pop princess. I stand to be corrected and am interested if you have better recollection of times/dates/occurences though.

Frogstomp was them being a teenage garage band emulating Nirvana with all the innocence and spontaneity that involes and getting an instant hit. Like the second book, everything gets much harder.

Not part of the purists of that era since I was born in '94 but I'm as big a fan of 70s/80s punk as you're likely to come across these days and I f****** love that album. Shame everything Stockdale has released since just feels like a desperate attempt to recreate that record.
