'A trilogy should be judged as a whole' is fair though.

Depends on the trilogy.

Some trilogies are written so that you need to see them all to get the full story, some are standalone movies with common characters or themes and some are standalone movies without common characters or themes.

The Three Colors trilogy is one where each movie can, and should, be judged on its own merits and you don't need to see the full trilogy to appreciate the individual movies.

That's not TFA though. FFS, the movie ends on a cliff hanger. That should immediately signal it's going to roll straight in to the next and is merely one episode in a larger story.

I wouldn't go as far to say it ended in a cliffhanger, see spoiler, but it certainly sends a clear message that there is more to come.

You can appreciate the individual movies, but you can't appreciate the Trilogy, Star Wars is a Trilogy by design, so needs the appropriate slack to be cut as the resolution will always be insufficient and unfulfilling in Part 1.
