Calling Janus or anyone else with some tradie knowledge.

It's not normal for a hot water system to be constantly running? there is a loud running water sound coming from the system and the water meter is slowly running, plus given the fact that our hot water only stays hot for a few hours even if no one uses it.

Is it an old boiler or an instantaneous one? If it's a boiler, it sounds like you've got a leak.

I think its a boiler type, i think i'm starting to diagnose it, i turned off the cold water tap and the noise stopped and the meter stopped as well, could it be that one of the valves is stuffed and constantly pumping in cold water replacing the hot?

Our hot water only lasts a few hours even if no one uses it.

Other way around? If it is a boiler (storage heater) then it could still be filling up. Instantaneous heaters only run when there is outlet flow so if no hot taps are on and water is running through an instantaneous heater you have a leak. That is assuming you don't have a hot water recirculation system.

The fact that LukeSA says the water only stays hot for a few hours sounds as if it is an off peak storage heater.

It is an off peak system but surely hot water lasts more than a few hours sitting in the tank.

Going from your reply to Papa G it does sound like a stuck float valve. If the water only heats off peak (usually over night) and cold water is constantly running in then you will run out of hot water pretty quickly.

I absolutely love the fact that you have a plumbing issue and choose to come here for advice.

Which it does, i have a boost button in our electric meter box when pressed heats up the system but when my brother has a shower for work at 4pm it's hot and when my sister has one at 9pm it's stone cold, one shower doesn't deplete all the hot water.

Better of getting an opinion here than to get a plumber out and them say there is nothing wrong and it costs us a couple of hundred which they did last time, they turned on the tap, eyed the hot water system and pressed the boost button, they didn't check the valves or the thermostat.

Or you sit here asking Luigi for plumbing advice while your house explodes.

Last time I had a plumbing issue I listened to "Don't stand so colostomy" by The Police and then I wanted to die.

PAFC66 - Hey I've only been here a few minutes, what's going on?

Sidenote: "Oh, the clown, the only one of you buffoons who doesn't make me laugh" is one of the all time great lines.

Lukesa

Sounds like an old boiler that has a valve leaking
