I know that if you want your plants to grow really strong you should prune the twigs and branches that don't have developing buds on them so all the nutrients get directed toward the flowers/fruit instead of just to the leaves. Also, you want to prune any branches that are down the bottom of the tree because they don't get as much sunlight and therefore will die early anyway. Cut all branches at a 45 degree angle, leaving a little stub (not flush) and seal them so the plant doesn't direct a lot of nutrients to healing the wound.

One of the trunks of our banana tree had falling over, so I ripped it off the main base of the tree and have replanted it elsewhere. Do you think it will live?

In the 5 years of being here, it's damn near impossible to kill.
