I'm no fan of male dangly bits, but go back to no clothing for all competitors. Swimming no fancy materials to glide through water. Runners no shoes. Only the obvious equipment for events like Javelin, gun, hockey stick etc. The only exceptions protection for events like boxing, judo, etc that are contact sports.

Although to be fair it was called the World Championships up until the last one, when they changed the name to the World Cup. I still remember Dream Team II ruining everyone's faces at the 1994 World Championships which for some reason were on SBS, in one game Shaquille O'neal threw himself an alley-oop off the backboard on a fast break.
