How good are Buble xmas songs ??
While I have little sympathy for people who indulge in the xmas hysteria I truly pity shop assistants at this time of year. Being forced to listen to xmas carols for your entire working day is inhuman.

I was in Woollies this morning and the Old Groaner was crackling away over the tannoy and one lady was very pleased, "Thank God - White Christmas!" But like you say, she doesn't have to work there..

Snow forecast for Perth on xmas day o_O

Average annual snow days for Bethlehem is 3 with average for December being 1. God being born on a day when it snowed is probably only second to the miracle of virgin birth.

Our beaches are very white - especially early summer. Some unique local hazards though...

Five years in retail permanently ruined Christmas for me. I tend to avoid it as much as possible. Helps that I don't like my family and feel absolutely no guilt in saying "no, i'm not going to your shitty family gathering". :)

Dear parent,

When your child is running around in a public place being an annoying little pain in the arse, how about bringing the little turd under control instead of looking at people with that goofy grin on your face that says "surely you find his/her behaviour as adorable as I do". No, I/we clearly do not.

I care... because I want to have a sense of connection with the characters so that I feel what they feel and are therefore more engaged.

If the cast is disproportionately male for no good reason, then it breaks my sense of engrossment in the film as it isn't reflective of reality. Especially if its supposed to be somewhat realistic.

The best example from R1 is when:

the mother died in a pathetic whimpy matryr way. If that was my Mum, she would have somehow outsmarted them, kicked their arse or at least taken the baddy out with her. So when she died, I felt nothing for her.

Which would be fine, if that was just one type of female character and there were some other strong female characters balancing it out, but there wasn't in R1. Even Jyn's arc was dependent on two male father figures.
Are your friends, family, social circle, and workplace split pretty evenly?

Mine aren't. All of them are geared toward males. I have 2 brothers. Dad has a brother and aunty. Mum has a brother and half sister. My department in work is 4 blokes with 1 female boss. My friends overwhelmingly male, my social circle not as overwhelming by still mostly male. In no way do movies that feature more men than women break reality, and neither do movies that feature more women than men.

You're looking for something that isn't there. I hope WW2 didn't break your connection with reality either, a lot of fellas played big parts and small parts in that one. Even 'Nam. Even the current happenings in the Middle East.

I went with my wife to see Rogue 1.

In the lead up to TFA, My wife hated Star wars barely saw any of the originals and didnt even know about episodes 1-3.

So me being pumped for TFA she wanted come watch it with me. I couldn't have her come without any understanding of it all so We sat down and watched all 6 movies as they released, I explained every minute detail of it all to her.

After watching it all she was fully indoctrinated into the lore of it all, asking legit questions and everything I was so proud of her. She became a fan.

Then R1 comes around. This time we are both pumped and I was relieved for the first time in my life I was going with someone else who I thought has a decent understanding and I could actually discuss my thoughts with after the movie.

So we get into the movie and then the blind monk character does his thing.

My wife then whispers to me "oh he must be a Jedi" and my response was why? "He can use the force" only Jedi and sith use the force."

Right there I knew the dream was over.

Yeah but the movie isn't about your social circle, or mine, it's about a fictional world based on a rebellion. Which women have always played a huge part in, especially within the context of R1 which wasn't really a combat only type movie. I don't have an issue with Saving Private Ryan being an all male movie for example...

There were plenty of roles which could have suitably been played by a woman in R1, in fact if they had of been a woman probably would have been more realistic, but they specifically decided to cast males. Even if it was just a couple more, not a 50/50, it would have made for a more interesting movie but instead its like 18:2. Even the damn extras are all male.

And after all that...

the one strong female character was deeply intertwined with her male father figures, as if she couldnt have possibly been who she was without them, rather than having her own story arc.

What makes you think that the world in R1 is any different to this realist? How is a rebellion that has more men than women, but not an absence of women unrealistic? Why is Star Wars being held to a greater standard of diversity?

You realise that seeing the extras blown to bits, if too many of those were women it would create an equally big shitstorm? Seeing those female rebels killed by the male orientated Empire?

Probably because of opportunity I suppose. The freedom to create diversity was there, but not realised. And that's disappointing.

I don't buy into this theory that audiences just cant handle females dying or getting blown up. We've seen sexual and domestic violence towards women depicted on screen many times.
Heck, we see a woman shot in the first 5 minutes!

Of all the women in R1 we have Jyn whose main story arc exists at the bequest of men. Mon Mothma - wouldn't it be great to see her just take control of a meeting and lay down the law? I mean she is the rebellion leader, but she is depicted as weak. Then we have Lyra Erso. Also, weak.

And thats it really.

Then there are 27 males. Not asking for much, just strengthen up the aforementioned female roles, maybe cast one more in a semi major role, and perhaps include a female alien as a pilot or robot and we're all good.

Did you tell her that Anakin could use the Force to fly his pod racer? That Luke used the Force to blow up the Death Star? Neither of them were Jedi at the time.

First of all, wow, is it really `diverse' to have a proportionate number of female roles to male roles that corresponds to actual proportions? Its not, what we're seeing in R1 is abnormal, and its a recurring abnormality.

As for `greater standard of diversity', again its pretty sad that maybe vaguely matching RL percentages is something you consider a `greater standard' and yet think there's nothing wrong with it. Secondly, the main reason is because every single part of Star Wars is made up, the whole thing. There's no gender-switching for historical figures needed or anything, every single thing in every single Star Wars film is invented. There is no reason to reinvent the exclusion of women and minorities. None. And particularly when you are inventing a whole new core cast of characters, supporting characters, one-line disposables and general extras.

You realise that seeing the extras blown to bits, if too many of those were women it would create an equally big shitstorm? Seeing those female rebels killed by the male orientated Empire?
LOL what? I am pretty sure that fiction and film uses the death of women with great consistency to build drama/establish villainy.
